Snowy Egret

Snowy Egret visiting Cape Town - June 2015
Cape Town got a snowy visitor during this winter and it is not snow (not yet), but Snowy Egret (Egretta thula). It seemed to have lost its way while migrating from South America to the north.

According to Wikipedia: "It is the American counterpart of our Little Egret. They have a slim black bill and long black legs with yellow feet. The area of the upper bill, in front of the eyes, is yellow but turns red during the breeding season, when the adults also gain recurved plumes on the back, making for a "shaggy" effect. The juvenile looks similar to the adult, but the base of the bill is paler, and a green or yellow line runs down the back of the legs."

I had the opportunity today to enjoy the company of this visitor.

There has been countless photos of this guy on Facebook - it must be without a doubt the most photographed individual bird in SA at the moment.

You are very fortunate to have seen it - I am rather jealous!

umtali1, hilda, barryels, Crested Val and Karin Mitton - thank you for your comments

The excitement here in Cape Town is really high with lots of people with big cameras congregating on the bank of the river. I was there again this morning, because the weather was amazing unlike yesterday being a bit misty that affected the light conditions.

Here are some more :cam: taken today.... :D

But first, some other egrets also around and it will be good to show them all together so one could see the differences.
Image

As we followed the Snowy egret, it seemed it took a liking to the Little egret as they flew together at times.

umtali, barryels, hilda and Karin Mitton - thank you for the kind comments.

Glad you enjoyed this one as much as I have. The scene along the river is filled with excitement as lots of photographers and interested birders visiting. Hope to visit again over the weekend as long as the weather plays along.

The added benefit is that I discovered two bird hides which is great. Lots of Pieds and Malachites active as wellas lots of other water birds. Just a pity a lot of rubble around as the river runs though some settlements bring all the garbage with it. Nevertheless, still excited to learn more about this part of town with added birding opportunities.
