My list is horribly slow at climbing, added Antarctic Tern at Cape Recife and Macoa Duck at Rietvlei. New total 538, year-end total of 550 seems far fetched! :?

A big dissapointment actually. I kept on dipping on the Southern Black Koorhaan, every time we drove through the Karoo (just over the mountain from where I now live). Really anoying since my wife who works in Oudshoorn sees them on a weekly basis.

But I finally got one! I really wanted to get a Knysna Woodpecker for 600, cos that has been driving me dilly since I moved to the southern cape.

Just back from our trip to Agulhas and despite high winds and flooding preventing access to the salt pans and wetland areas we managed 15 new ticks giving us an updated total of 460.

I have been birding sporadically since 1995 with maybe 2 trips a year and very average binoculars. Three years ago my time was freed up by all my own little birds fleeing the nest. I joined Birdlife Port Natal and got myself some Bushnells. These two things made a huge difference. Firstly, I went on bird outings twice a month and spent time with some very kowledgeable birders from whom I have learnt a lot. Secondly, the new binos meant I could now distinguish things like leg and eye colour. I also began to make a bit of an effort with bird calls (still not my forte). My life list at the time had slowly got to about 325. By November last year, it was on 385. I've made a concerted effort since then to travel to different areas to up my list. For me, its not just about the tick; its about what yolu learn about the birds while pursuing the tick.

My latest trip was to Mountain Zebra where I got 11 lifers and my list is now on 460 - looking for that 500.
Latest lifers: Large-billed Lark; Southern Grey Tit; Ludwig's Bustard; Barau's Petrel; Lemon Dove

thanks Johan, It was suggested to me by Lion Queen on the Mountain Zebra forum. Looks good. I will post some pics from Mountain Zebra some time. Is it best to do this under a new thread or is there an existing one it woyuld be better to use?
