Sandgrouse, Burchell's

Unread post by Great Dane » Mon Apr 08, 2013 10:55 am

Saw these two in Mokala NP south of Kimberly in the Easter weekend.

After running in front of the car on this track towards the Waal River for some time they finally decided to fly off (seemed to be good flyers).

My best guess is Burchell's Sandgrouse, but as it was not on their bird-list and seems to be somewhat out of their distribution I am not sure. Anyone?

You are correct with your ID, Michael. Mokala is on the edge of the known distribution range and the habitat is right for them. So, no reason why not. According to SABAP data it was previously seen in the northern part of Mokala NR. (Recorded twice out of 17 full protocol cards submitted for that area)
728 Latest lifers: Hartlaub's babbler, Coppery-tailed coucal, Red-billed spurfowl, White-browed coucal, Scharlow's turaco, Copper sunbird, Long-toed lapwing, Eastern bronze-naped pigeon, Malagasy pond heron, Soft-plumaged petrel, Orange-winged pytilia.

I was in a private reserve near Kimberley in November GB, and had a great sighting of these chaps there.

Not a good spot for a take-off Albert! She seems to be struggling! :D

Great shot of the three of them!
