Addo: A bit of trivia

Unread post by Rooies » Fri Oct 29, 2010 10:34 am

Something I have just read in my 1969 AA road atlas.

Entrance fees were payable to the (one and only) ranger.
No roads inside the park.
There were observation posts all along the fence.
The best time was early morning or late afternoon when the elephants came out of the bushes to receive their daily rations of oranges and other goodies to eat. It was advisable to phone the Port Elizabeth Publicity Association first to find out when the ellies are going to be fed, because feeding times varied according to season.
Besides the elephants, there were also hundreds of buffaloes, antilope, a few bush pigs.....and hippos.

It is Afrikaans, so it will only be appreciated by a few.

I have just looked up a very old book on Our National parks writte in 1940.. and there is quite a tory about ADDO in it . Unfortunately It is difficult to photostat as I cannot open the pages properly . Its in both English and Afrikaans .. Its a little long too and all is interesting so I wouldn't want to leave any text out.
I also found a little booklet where it state Life fellowship of the national Parks cost 50 Pounds!!! I wonder if that still is valid

I remember going to the park in the early 70's as a little girl and watching the elephants totally pig out on oranges at the main camp. Hapoor's head was in the restaurant and apart from that, if you drove through the park, pretty much nothing happening. Somehow that memory stays ingrained - how the ellies loved those oranges!!! I realise why they can't have them anymore, but it was a very special time in my life and obviously in theirs too.
Born in Zambia, lived in the Kafue National Park and Luangwa Valley - reported my heart stolen by Africa at a young age.
