Hi Tobs.

Not too sure about it's current status and schedule, but when we were there over the holidays, there was no sign of any construction starting in the area designated for it.
We left 1 Jan.

There is an Interpretive Centre that will be built during this year at the main camp. Construction has not yet started but should do so in a few months.

What is the new construction that is going on in front of the car park in the main camp?

Hi Carolynn,

It is the new information centre, which I believe is going to be something like the ellie hall at Letaba. It will house the statue of Hapoor that is in the restaurant at the mo for example.

Great idea but why there...blocks some of the view to the waterhole, chopped up that lovely lawn and for sure has chased the breeding Rebilled Woodhoopoes and Red fronted Tinkerbirds from their popular nesting holes. There are so many other sites eg past the birdhide on the way to the game area gate...were stakeholders consulted?????

I agree- my first reaction was that if they had to build there, then hopefully it was a new restaurant with a nice deck with a view of the waterhole. I never even knew about the birds' nesting holes, so now it is even more of a pity. "The wrong place at the right time!"

In response to some of the issues that have been raised here:

blocks some of the view to the waterhole

Surely you agree that there are better views from the lookout platform, the underground hide, the picnic area, the safari tents & campsite? Once the centre is complete, visitors will still be able to access the grass area between the building and the fenceline.

chased the breeding Rebilled Woodhoopoes and Red fronted Tinkerbirds from their popular nesting holes

Redbilled Woodhoopoes lay eggs anytime between October-March. Although they have been known to use the same nesting holes from one year to the next, they do not always do so and have territories of 20-27 hectares. Redfronted Tinkerbirds have a larger territorial range and also excavate their own nest holes. They lay eggs between August-November. There are still plenty of Woodhoopoes and Tinkerbirds around the main camp and in the Park and we have seen them at other nesting holes around the camp recently.

And the dikkops area

Dikkops (or thick-knees as I think they are now known) are often seen around the Nyati waterhole (and many other locations in the main game area) but on consultation with the rangers and other staff in the main camp have not heard of dikkops regularly using that particular area.

Hope ther result is worth it.

Construction is never a pleasant sight or sound but the result will definitely be worth it. The centre will have comprehensive info about all aspects of the Park, as well as some very exciting features which cannot yet be revealed (don't want to spoil the suprise  ). So please bear with us!

Best of luck with the construction. When do you anticipate the centre to be in operation?

I suppose my 21 June visit will not see the final product, but my December one might.

The construction will not be complete in June, although it is planned for the last few months of the year. However, there is still all the inside info that needs to be added, so we are probably looking at early 2009.

I'm so looking forward to this.
Then we can also boast with something nice and spectacular like Letaba and the other camps
