Addo for 1st-time-to-Africa parents in law?

Unread post by Graham_5000 » Wed Jun 14, 2017 11:22 am

I'm moving back to South Africa in August (was born in PE).

My wife's parents would like to visit in Jan, Feb or March. As a Kruger lover, I haven't yet been to Addo, but given the time of year I thought it might be preferable for them (they're from the UK), given that it's malaria free (if they visit us again in winter at some point, Kruger it shall be).

Is Addo a good option do you think? What is the park like for general game sightings, buck, giraffes etc? Is there an animal census out of interest?

Would five nights split between Matyholweni and Main Camp work well?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Hi Graham,

Addo is a true gem and I'm sure they will love it.

As in any other park, sightings are being on the right place at the right time. :D

Here is a Mammal list for Addo

An idea on Addo climate can be found here

Your split between the two camps will be perfect.

Topic about Addo Lions

There are some new cubs, so hopefully you are lucky and get to see them!

Graham I did exactly the same thing.

Also from UK and brought our some friends Feb 2016.

I am a Krugerholic and would dearly have loved to take them there, but one of them has ME and was worried about anti malarials.

I therefore decided on Addo, and I was so glad I did!!!

It is not Kruger of course, much smaller, but we saw plenty of animals and birds, including lions!!!

Also saw Eland which was a first for mr, andthe Ado ellies are much friendlier!!!

Go and book now, you will not regret it.

Wishing you a wonderful trip.
I long each day for my beloved Kruger!!!!

Thanks so much for all your recommendations. Sorry for not replying sooner - wanted to ensure I had had enough time to read all the links. So it seems that giraffes and impala are the only "common" game that aren't in the park.

I understand that there are also some hippos in the park?

It does look fantastic. Semi-torn to include some Zuurberg in the itinerary, as they love hiking!

I would be keen for them also to see the Karoo National Park - I loved the place a couple of years ago - a real gem.

Hi as you will be near Mountain Zebra NP I would suggest a stay there if you can fit it in. Its absolutely stunning and there are two beautiful picnic spots with trees and braai set up. One with a natural swimming pool and one with a man made pool. We were very very impressed. We have stayed at Addo twice now, at Maty, and its fantastic as the camp is so quiet. Pen

Addo is amazing, and it would be perfect for your in-laws' visit. Tha park is small enough to drive top to bottom, so even staying in the main camp would be perfect.

I agree with penliva - Mountain Zebra is only 2 hours away, and if you can fit a night or 2 there, you will not regret it.

As others have suggested, a trip to MZNP is also a great idea. Addo does have hippos but not in areas that you would access from the main game area of the park
