Travel from Nossob to Kalahari Tented Camp

Unread post by Riaanf31 » Sat Jan 16, 2016 1:48 pm

Dear Forumites,

After many years of going to KNP we'll be venturing to KTP for the first time.

We've managed to book a Fortuner or similar through Avis which as standard is 4x2.

My question is related to when we need to make our way from Nossob to KTP.

Would we need to travel all the way South to Twee Rivieren and then onwards to KTP or would the 4x2 (loaded with 4 adults and gear) be able to navigate the by-road from Dikbaarskolk to Urikaruus and then onwards to KTP?

We'll have trial and 4x4 driving knowledge, but unsure if this route requires prebooking and/or if not it's possible to navigate in our vehicle of choice.

If required then I'll consider upgrading the vehicle booking to a 4x4, but from a previous post I understood that is not a necessity

Regards
Riaan

Dear Riaanf31,

Glad to see that you and SC decided to visit KTP as well  .

No you don't have to travel all the way down to TR. The Upper Dune Road from Dikbaardskolk to the Auob River side of the park is a normal gravel road where a sedan can also drive  . Here is a picture of how the upper dune road looks like:

For further info on KTP read through this topic General Advice when visiting KTP for the first time

If you don't stay at Gharagab or Bitterpan there is no need for a 4x4  .
Always be humble and understanding.

Hi Riaanf31
No problem to drive this road from Dikbaarskolk to Urikaruus with any car even a sedan. We did last august from Nossob to Mata Mata with a Fortuner 2x4 and it was an easy one and in rather good conditions.
With a 2x4 you can visit all camps excpet some wilderness camps as Gharagab and Bitterpan :D
I will post quite soon some pictures of this road in my TR Heart-warming Kgalagadi but frozen bodies [ viewtopic.php?f=27&t=88018 ]

Enjoy your trip

What time of year are you going Riaan?

Basic tips are : take your own water, small liquifruit boxes act as great ice blocks and by the time you've driven your morning drive they will be defrosted and nicely chill. It can get quite cold at night so hot water bottles are good and we have found that an extra 'good' knife is very useful.

And then there is always the beer/wine for your braai in the evening :)

Have a fantastic stay :D

I came here for the same question, which is now answered, thank you! :)

Based on this answer and that the Kalahari Tented Camp has space, we now have the chance to switch two nights in Twee Rivieren to Kalahari Tented Camp. Do you think it's a good thing to switch? KTC is a little bit more expensive, because we have a camper but they are only offering tents.

TWEE RIVIEREN REST CAMP
17/04/16 to 19/04/16

NOSSOB REST CAMP
19/04/16 to 20/04/16

TWEE RIVIEREN REST CAMP or switch both nights to KALAHARI TENTED CAMP?
20/04/16 to 22/04/16

MATA MATA REST CAMP
22/04/16 to 23/04/16

TWEE RIVIEREN REST CAMP
23/04/16 to 24/04/16

Sorry for not opening a new thread, if I have to do it, I will :-)

.It's more expensive for sure but worth the money
