Advice please twee riverin & Mata Mata stay

Unread post by kittykat23uk » Tue Sep 19, 2017 5:49 am

Hi everyone

As we continue our journey, please help us make the most of our stay in Kgalagadi! :) Right now this is how our booking looks:
30 sept Kalahari trails
1 Oct Twee Riv
2 Oct Mata Mata riverfront chalets
3 Oct Kalahari tented camp unfenced 3 km from Mata Mata
4 Oct Mata Mata
5 Oct Mata Mata
6 Oct Jo & Mum depart on the 17:10 flight from Upington

Now we have been having some issues with our tour company. Basically we had high hopes for our driver/guide that he wold be a competent naturalist but so far doesn't seem to know his cape rock jumper from a steenbok! :(

He also just got back from leading a tour across kgalagadi and into Namibia. He has been bemoaning the fact that there was nothing to see in kgalagadi! They did cover etosha so maybe that has colour his vision somewhat.

But he has said that the last group was up around Nossob and acroast to Auob out that way into Namibia. He has advosed us that Nossob was the least productive area and that we won't go there.

This conflicts with the advice from our booking agent who has been wanting to put is in Nossob but so far unsuccessful in doing so.

So my question to you all are:

1. Please can you provide me with any advice on which routes to try for the best game viewing experience we can have given where we are staying? Our interests are basically everything , birds, mammals etc, but I would love to show my mum lions and cheetahs.

2.should we still press our tour company to get us into Nossob in the unlikely event of an opening ?

3. Is there any truth to what our guide is telling us? Is kgalagadi less productive right now due to the drought?

Thank you!

Jo

Hi kittykat23uk

As far as your question wrt animal sightings in the KTP is concerned, you are never guaranteed sightings, but given patience and perseverance you are sure to be rewarded. It is important to be out in the park especially in the early morning and late evening to maximise your chances of seeing the predators.
During the day rather find a waterhole and wait and see what arrives.
October can be hot and dry, so the animals will frequent the waterholes during the day. The loop roads south of Mata Mata can be very productive and is the best area in the park for cheetah sightings

Sightings on the Nossob side are slightly harder to come by due to the wider river bed and high verges. That being said we had had some of our best sightings, especially of lions, on the Nossob side.
Looking at your itinery, you will be hard pressed to get to Nossob as well seeing as you only have 5 nights in the park. You won't want to give up the Riverfront chalet or KTC bookings, and given that you need at least 2 nights in Nossob to give you time there you may battle for time.
Nossob is also quite a bit further from Twee Riveren than Mata Mata so it would be better to travel to Upington from Mata Mata than Nossob

I would keep the booking as is and do Nossob another time. (You could always take a day drive to Nossob on one day to see what it looks like)

Many thanks! Are there any good spots for lions in the area that we will be? Any recent sightings of caracal or brown hyena?

Lions can be seen anywhere.
The area between Craig Lockhart and 13th borehole is usually good
Caracal and brown hyena Good luck  They are shy

Many thanks! Are any of the camps we stay in harbouring any of the smaller animals that we should look for or keep an eye out for? We are really interested in seeing anything like bats, owls, mongoose etc? Anything really! :)

Agree with GavinW recommendation not to split your booking and rather stay where you have booked. We were there in July and sighting not that good as lions did not visit the water holes that often, but still a few good sightings.

Tented camp had a pride of lions with cubs for about 5 days. The pride moves between Dalkeith and Mata-Mata. We also saw lions at 13th on the day we departed so be prepared to arrive at 11 am at TR on the last day. You will still be able to get to Upington on time. Just leave at gate opening in case you suddenly get good sightings on the way out.

Leopard with cub was seen near 13th to Urikaruus areas.

We only saw cheetah at Nossob, but that's our luck. Any area along the MM road is good.

Lookout for caracal near Urikaruus, but not that easy to spot. Got our first one after numerous visits of 3 weeks long at a time this year so you will be very lucky if you see one.

Hope you have a great time at the water hole. Make 14th a late afternoon visit if you don't have lions in camp.

Many thanks! Is there an app or anything for latest sightings? Or just ask around and check the boards?

Thanks

Jo
