Rooiputs- Is this the end?

Unread post by WeskusKlong » Mon Oct 08, 2012 11:07 am

One of the most beautiful sights on this planet - a sunset at Rooiputs:

But sadly if you turn around and look east you see this... the beginning of construction of the lodge. What you see here are the stilts on which the buildings will be constructed. It is campsite 6's A-frame on the foreground   .

Does anybody know if they will keep the camp sites or is this now to become a destination for the rich only?

Just spoken to someone on the Botswana side because we are camping there early December. They are constructing 12 chalets and the camping area will still be there.

While I understand the feelings of all you dedicated campers, for me, not being a camper, the possibility of Rooiputs also having a few chalets is very appealing  But I do see that it means the end of Rooiputs 'as you've known it' :(

@ arks the construction on the photo is definitely not that of rustic chalets as on the SA side, but rather of a huge main building catering for what lodges do - spa, restaurant facilities etc. There are smaller constructions going up a bit further away - which are most probably the chalets/rooms then. So I'm sorry but I don't share your optimism. I doubt if this will go without the addition of power generators as well. It sits high on a dune looking over Rooiputs. We campers don't want to see a lodge at Rooiputs, and I'm sure the lodge dwellers won't like to see campers while enjoying their sunset from their luxury dwellings so lets see how long they keep the campsite functional  They could have constructed it a bit further away from the campsites.

Ja, WKK, I DO see your point :( I'd not realised that it was meant to be a whole lodge complex. Seems rather bad planning?

We experienced it,

O.M.W.!! every time I leave the park I'm afraid something like this is going to take place in my absence and I can't wait for next year's leave to come and find the park as I left it :)
until now.... sad but reality
And it surprises me. I learned from South Africans living in Botswana that the whole 'lodge' thing is not working anymore, no buns to put in the empty beds. Overrated prices and some times lack of service, new regulations etc etc and still building new ones....
