Leeuwdril Male

Unread post by Eagle Eyes » Wed Nov 21, 2007 9:35 pm

Named after the Leeuwdril waterhole where he was first seen.

Hi everybody!
I thought it would be a great idea to start this thread. It would help people recognize the leopards they see, also it would be fun to see the ranges of KTP leopards by following the apperances of the leopards.

Now for the identification guide:
first up - The Leeudril Male:

Image

he has a semi-circle of dots around his lower half of his left eye. he also has two blobs-1 at the corner of his left eye and the other one a centimetre below. one more feature is his......well.......uuuuuummmmm near his tail.

Hi wanderw - saw you mentioned the ring of spots under the left eye of the Leeudril male......these pics were taken in July 07.....I think its the Leeudril male although we only really had a good view of his right side, there is one pic where I think you can just see the spots in the ring! We saw him on the slopes north of Rooiputs. I will also try attach a video clip

Hi Jo - your pix look like the Leeuwdril male. I can't be 100% certain though as I only have pix of his left side. I'm also having trouble seeing the video - I will try again tomorrow. Thanx for the pix and info  - North of Rooiputs? Wow - he has quite a large range!( Samevloeing, Houmoed, Munroe, Leeudril and Rooiputs)

Kgalagadi Leopard identification

Unread post by Son godin » Fri Jan 27, 2012 4:31 pm

The sighting was on a freezing cold winter's morning in July 2006. We saw two leopards in the tree not far from Munro. I will be able to find the tree again, but difficult to give GPS points now. Its a few 100m after a No_entry road on the southern side of the road. I need to find the originals to give you exact times.

Here are some more pics of the two leopards. One was looking towards us lower down the tree, while the other one was eating on a springbok kill on top of a weavers nest:

The leopards did not enjoy our attention and got out of the tree and walked towards the dunes.

Next trip: Kgalagadi in July 2017

@Son godin - Many thanks for the extra info! :gflower:
Your last 2 pix are of the Leeudril Male. We have not got many sightings of him, so this is a great help. A super sighting of the two leopards!

galagadi Leopard identification

Unread post by wanderw » Fri Jan 27, 2012 9:51 pm

@Son godin - The Leeudril Male is the father of Jannie(born approx April 2007). However, we think the father of Kruiper(born approx July 2008) is the Houmoed Male (seen mating with Maja at the beginning of April 2008).

Maja, Jannie and Leeuwdril male

Unread post by wanderw » Fri Jan 27, 2012 10:07 pm

@Son godin - Some more info for your interest : Pic below is of the Leeudril Male, Maja and Jannie.

Image

If the Leeudril Male was not Jannie's father , he would probably have killed Jannie at this sighting in Sep 2007. Jannie growled and hissed at his dad, and got between Maja and the big male. The Leeudril male was very tolerant of the cub, and side stepped around Jannie to get to Maja.
