The excitement is mounting. We are on our way again to KTP in May and still have not done the Leeudril 4x4 trial. Maybe this time. What is the correct pronunciation of Urikaruus, please someone?

Leeuwdril 4x4 trail must be booked in advance? Or only an authorization is needed?

Dear Flavia,

You have to pre-book if you want to drive this trail  .

See below:

Leeudril 4x4 Loop

General Information

Total off road distance is 13,2km passing the Gemsbok windmill.
Total driving distance from Twee Rivieren and back is 50km.
This is a one way trail starting north of the Leeuwdril waterhole and ending at the lookout point north of the Houmoed waterhole.
To be used by prior booking only.
A trail fee of R180 is to be paid. Please report back to reception on return.
The trail will be closed if after rain the road from the confluence to Kij Kij is closed.
The trail is booked on a day to day basis only.

Rules

Stay on the track.
No test driving of any dunes from the opposite direction is allowed.
Do not exceed a speed of 25 km/hour.
Deflate your tyres to at least 1.2 bar before starting the trail.
Do not leave your vehicle.
Use 4 x 4 ratio in low range at all times.
The use of soft tyres, low speed and 4 x 4 ratio is very important to protect the driving surface from becoming corrugated.

Hi Flavia,

We booked the trail from 2R the night before.
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".

We've in the past, when not staying at TR, booked and payed Leeudril for a few days later, then they make a note on your slip for which day you are planning to drive the 4X4 route. This we did while booking in at TR reception.

But the last time we drove, we actually booked Leeudril in Mata Mata.

Enjoy the route and your trip!

LQ - you are a frequent visitor (lucky you!!). You will know the answer to this - at one time the Leeuwdril 4x4 track was closed - I think because certain people had not obeyed the rules - is it now open again?? From your comment, it sounds as if it is open again.

It was open July when we last visited

And yes they had to close it because people did not obey the rules and some of the dunes we badly damaged!

Actually a lovely 4X4 route to do especially is you don't have to much 4X4 experience.

We've never seen WOW sightings on the route, just the normal Gemsbok, Steenbok, RHB, Jackal and AWC.

BUT I just love the Witgat trees!! Some beautiful examples!!!
