Not to be missed - June 08 Getaway magazine

Unread post by JJay » Mon May 19, 2008 10:35 pm

Some excellent KNP reading in the June 2008 edition of the Getaway magazine. Purchased it today, and was ready to pack my bags and head right into the park after reading it. A super article on the Tuskers (lovely pic of Duke) and a notable mention of the Sanparks forum. A must-buy for all KNP fans. :D

Based on this info, I bought the new Getaway. Thanks, I now remember why I do not buy it anymore  Instead of an article to cover the wonderfull park, 4 people listed their sponsored best-lists. I mean, the majority of the info are for lodges in excess of R2500 per person! And then they have the cheek to include a full page on their SPONSORED brand new vehicles! Maybe they should start living like average South Africans!!!

The accomodation in Pafuri also looks good - added to my looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong list 8)

Interesting to note that the bee-eater photo was made by one of the members of our "sister forum", ODP!

Well I read my copy today and I will read it over and over. Anything on Kruger is worth reading and on the subject of those expensive places ...well I wouldn't want to stay there anyway ..thats not Kruger and I didn't give them a glance!!

Is there any kind soul who would be prepared to send a copy of the June getaway magazine (or just the relevant feature)to me in the UK? I'll gladly refund you and once I have read it I'll circulate it amongst the other UK forumites.

Rayb, I will send you my copy , it has been paged through once . I will as a favour also enclose a copy of Go! (unless you are an ex South African who speaks afrikaans , let me know and I will send Weg!) , the english version of an excellent afrikaans outdoors magazine called Weg! , which tells it like it is , very few sponsored articles , in my opinion more up the real outdoor lovers street ! It is probably most suited to someone with an understanding of afrikaans -down to earth- South African culture , no exuberantly priced lodges etc .
pm me your name and postal address .
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

I subscribe to Getaway and it's my moment to dream.
I think it's a magazine with quite a varied target audience and it's often difficult to keep everyone satisfied.
I do see it as a "generalist", rather than a "specialist" publication.

I enjoyed the Kruger articles, just because I enjoy anything on Kruger. The editorial was outstanding. I find that Getaway's editorials are pertinent, thought provoking and aimed at changing our attitudes towards nature in general.

@ndloti, sorry I've only just seen your post. Thanks very much for the offer but Jakkalbassie has already sent two copies one for me and one for John and Poppy.

I see there is an online version of the magazine too, but it still has the March issue as the "current issue". :(

You can order e-version back-issues, though, so I'll have to check on this in a few months. I'd gladly purchase an annual online subscription, if the e-version came out at the same time as the print version.

I also very seldom buy this magazine, but I must say that this last issue was well worth the money I paid for it. :D
