Understanding elephants - Guidelines for safe and enjoyable elephant viewing

Unread post by Impisi08 » Wed Jun 14, 2017 2:26 pm

Understanding elephants - Guidelines for safe and enjoyable elephant viewing - 68 pages
ISBN: 978-1-77584-341-2 (penguinrandomhouse)
Zar 117 (?)

A book I bought at OR Tambo Airport last week. The book is written by the Elephant Specialist Advisory Group. Part one and two are about elephant facts and behaviour. Part three is about "How to watch elephants safely". It has three chapters: "Signals to look out for", "Warning signals and signs of aggression" and "How to conduct yourself around elephants". The last chapter is about the do's and don'ts and how to react in the event of a close encounter.

It's a super little book, lots of interesting information and guidelines for ellie watching.

I bought the book today and it looks very good.

Last weekend, at Nyarhi Rustic Bush Camp, we had one elephant bull in musth, who came very close to our unfenced camp several times. Our guides got us to step back near the vehicles and just whistled to the elephant. That was enough for him to realise that we were not a threat, and he went another way. An interesting lesson in elephant - human relations.

I am looking forward to reading the book and learning more about elephants and how to react with them.

George - it was very reasonably priced - R125 at Estoril Books. I think Exclusive Books also stock it.
