Kgalagadi Photography Hot Spots

Unread post by HermanPienaar » Tue Oct 29, 2013 9:10 am

I'm visiting Kgalagadi in Dec, staying at Nossob. I would like to know where the photography hotspots are in that region. Some photographers have a favourite place. What is yours?

The Hide overlooking the Nossob waterhole is absolutely lovely and has often proved fruitful for predators !

My favorite waterhole is Cubitje Quap about 10km north of Nossob. In the early morning the sun is behind you giving good light, and in the afternoon you can move around to the side of the waterhole to make use of afternoon light.

Yoy are on eye level with the animals and birds and a 500mm lens should fill the frame with jackal and leopard. Lots of sandgrouse in the late morning and we have seen eagles and buzzards in the water on most of our trips.

We have got good pics ar Rooikop and Marie se Draai but Cubitje Quap is our favourite

The Nossob hide is OK but I always feel I need more than a 500mm to get decent coverage in the frame. If you have a 1.6 or similar crop on your camera than a 500mm will give you around 800mm

Hope you get some great pics, we are there September 2014

My favourite place for photography near Nossob is the Kwang waterhole. Usually I go there early in the morning. Last year I had a brown hyena drinking at the waterhole one morning and a male lion the following morning. This year I had 3 lions the first morning and two cheetahs the second morning.

In the afternoons the sun at Marie se Gat is behind you, and Marie's is usually very productive.
