Nikon D3000 compatible with Sigma lenses

Unread post by Bushbaby30 » Mon May 23, 2011 7:17 pm

My friend has a Nikon D3000 and he is looking for a new lens. He is looking at getting either the Sigma 120-400mm or the Sigma 150-500mm but does not know if it will be compatible with his camera. Can anybody give any advice on this matter?

The D3000 has no in-body autofocus motor, but I think both these lenses have them. So they should work.

Yhanks, Duques!
Both has HSM so it seems as though it will auto focus. :hmz:

He has also heard that the lenses are to heavy for the body. Any ideas on that?

The lenses too heavy?

Lens weight only comes in if you put the camera on a tripod, and then add a lens. The Bigma will indeed give the mount a lot of stress that way. But of course you don't. ;)

I can't remember what the 800 mm Canon f/5.6 weighs but aside from a mount problem you could happily use that combo.

Both lenses weight about 1961g each. I have played with the 50-500 on my d3100 and it works. After about 15mins it did become a bit heavy in the hands. But then then i would still walk around with it all day as the photos coming out of the combo is worth it.

I have the 50-500 sigma - and used it when I had a D40 Nikon - the motor in the lens works great even with the old D40. I was concerned about the weight, but I always carry it by the Lens tripod mount - it works great as a handle. When shooting I hold the lens in one hand and push the shutter release with the other, or I use tripod. I now have D90 that has it's onw internal motor, and the sigma still works like a champ. I have had mine for 4 years and love it!

My Sigma 150-500 and my 300 mm both work great on Nikon D50, D80 and D90.
I personally find the 150-500 a lot lighter and easier to use than my Nikon 80-400, certainly a little longer but lighter and gives excellent results with all three bodies.
