Jan v Wyk goes Raptor hunting. KNP, December 2015

We had again a wonderful 14 days visit to Kruger in December 2015. We stayed just outside the Park and while the family was sleeping I was at the Paul Kruger gate every morning at 5h00 with the gate only opening at 5h30. It was very warm and dry with almost no vegetation left specially above Tsokwane.

The TR will follows a different route with random reports on my morning drives and sharing a few amazing sightings specially some raptor interaction. Most of the afternoons I spend at my favorite hide Lake Panic and will share some amazing sightings. (Images will also appear on the LP gallery over the next few months.)

Thirst morning drive...decided to took the H1-2 to Tshokwane and the H10 to Lower Sabie..

Our first sighting was a herd of Ellies enjoining a sand bath...

Our next sighting was a smiling Hyena .. :hmz:

Sleeping on his own Kruger pillow......... :hmz:

Just before Lower Sabie a Buffalo stopped and posed for a great close up...

Thank you for the views, comments and joining my TR

Another successful first morning drive

I spend every afternoon at Lake Panic and as usual the Lake delivered

It is the second year that we spotted the Squacco Heron at LP....

Image

One thing I learned over the years is that things happen quickly at LP.......... :hmz:

I took my I off the Fish Eagle for a moment( was watching him for over a hour) and missed the kill :wall:

...but got a great series of images feeding this years offspring.....

Image

Image

Feeding time....and success at last after the youngster was moaning for a long time... !

Image

Back to start all over again....

To be continued......day 2 ...

Really appreciate all the kind comments ..thank you

We decided today is breakfast day at our favorite picnic spot...Nhlanguleni....not so busy and a real bush feeling!!

The day start not good with the sad road killing on our way to Tshokwane...  The Hippo was still on the tar road and accident must have happened early morning... Sorry for the disturbing image ....

Image

We continued and know over the next few days there will be traffic jams :wall: :wall: and lots of photo opportunities...

The area above Tshokwane is very dry and very sad to see but a bloom time for the Predators.

We found a mating couple about 10km after Tshokwane......the Male posing for a few beautiful shots..

Appreciate all the comments and views....thank you all!

Few more shots of the beautiful Male....

Image

Image

We first spotted the mating couple and not long before we were surrounded by many cars.......and when they actually start mating, we were block in,they moved behind a bush and I missed out on some great mating shots :wall: :wall:

Image

Image

We had a perfect breakfast at Nhlanguleni ....watch may animals gathered at the waterhole. Suppose it is the only water available with Lugmag dam closed...for me really sad....missing the beautiful views with the dead trees in the middle of the dam... :wall:

Image

Image

Image

On our way back we spotted a young Rhino and his mother watching over him while taking a nap....

Image

Image

Time to get up.......

Image

The rangers moved the Hippo out of the road...this will definitely be a hot spot over the next few days.. :hmz:

The next morning we decided to take the H1-2 again and may be we will be lucky at the Hippo kill.

Early in the morning we only spot some Vultures and decided to come back later.

At Mazithi pan we spotted 4 Male Lions relaxing.

One near the road ..

Image

and the other three on the other side...

Image

The one near the car decided to investigate the activity in the pan...

Babers for breakfast...

Image

but didn't do so well in the wet mud.. .. :hmz:

Image

Image

Image

Don't want to get his feet full of mud...he decided to pose for a great photo...

Image

and then joined his brothers......doing what Lions do best.....nothing.... :hmz:

Image

On our way back we stopped at the Hippo kill with the Vultures still fighting ......

Image

More arriving...

Image

and then... suddenly the action started.....to be continued..

Were you in the other car when I talk to Heksie at the Mating Lions above Tswokwane?

Ok the buss will stop at the Hippo carcass for the next episodes ....please bear with me ....

Arriving back at the Hippo, we were busy photographing the Vultures when two Hyenas suddenly appear. It looks like they feed the whole night and want more...

They were not happy at all with the Vultures ...

Hope my images will tell the story...

Wonder at what speed he run towards me.....may be 15km/h... :hmz:

Kicking up dust...

Later another LP episode...

We were at the gate at 5h00......only one care in front of us.....that must be a good sign ...only the weather didn't play along.. :hmz:

Over the years we were lucky on the S65 ....but today we only spotted a few Impalas. We turn left on the H1-1 towards Skukuza.

A few cars were parked at Nhlanganeni waterhole .....when we approach we spotted our first Wild Dogs of the trip. Apparently there was also a Leopard but no sign when we arrived......

Sometimes they do nothing...but always alert...

Image

For me WD are the ultimate sighting.....so It was time to switch off the car and spend some time with the Doggies....

Hope you will enjoy our wonderful sighting ......

Not for long......play time...
