Sigmund's Kgalagadi Trip report in Pics. KTP, 2014

Unread post by Sigmund » Fri Jan 15, 2016 4:57 pm

As some of you might have noticed, I am not too fond of typing reports but rather let the pics tel the story.

Or let me rephrase that, on a couple of other internet groups that I belong to, I in the past got so carried away with trip reports that I ended up writing a 10 chapter report taking me 6 months to complete, on a 3 week trip

So now I rather post pics with a description here and there.

As soon as the lions moved off the kill, he was there to scavenge the leftovers.

These two were on the Western side of the Nossob road. There was another male lion with what seemed to be a broken lower jaw, lying in the Nossob riverbed on the Eastern side about 800 meters from where we were. When the couple started moving off in a Western direction, they stopped every so often and looked at the other male as if waiting for him to follow.

Cubitje Quap. Thirsty but uneasy as there is a male lion on a wildebeest kill sleeping approximately 50 meters from the watering hole.

Cubitje Quap. After keeping us waiting for 2 and a half hours, he finally left his kill for a drink affording us about 10 minutes of pictures before we had to get back to Nossob before the gates closed :?

Once again thanks for the comments.

Happy that you enjoy the pics as much as we enjoyed the experience

Part 5

Probably our best sighting ever in KTP kept for almost last.

Our sighting of Kabelo at Leeuwdril. We were camping at Rooiputs and had about 45 minutes to spare before gate closing time.
We were lingering around Leeuwdril and had just left to return to Rooiputs when, about 200meters from the water hole, the leopard approached us from the front
walking parallel to the road on his way to the water hole.

We turned around and slowly followed him and spent about half an hour with him altogether.
Just us and our friends in their vehicle.
Quite an experience.

Part 6

On our last night of camping at Rooiputs, we were woken at around 4AM by periodic roaring approaching us from the South East.

It was a constant looking over the shoulder type of packing that morning as the roaring came and went at intervals, moving closer all the time.

After a quiet period of approximately half an hour, the roaring now came from just North from our position at campsite 4 and we could tell that the lions passed us just beyond the dune ridge and were now at the Nossob Road.
Finished with packing up camp just prior to "gate opening time", we had a quick cup of coffee and departed for the Lower Dune Road on our way to Mata-Mata.
As we turned into the Nossob Road, leaving Rooiputs, we met one of the sources of the earlier roaring.

One of the Rooiputs big boys.
Being that early, we had him walking along the road with us for approximately 45 minutes before the first Tweerivieren vehicles arrived.

A while later, sitting at Kij-Kij at a cheetah sighting, we were told by people overtaking us on their way to Nossob, that approximately 20 minutes after us having left the male lion, his brother joined him along the roadside. Sorry to have missed both of them but one was better than none :D
