That was our last animal sighting before we arrived back at camp just before 2pm.
What a wonderful drive it had been

Now, what to do for the rest of the afternoon? :hmz:

Daddy decided to have a snooze and I headed to the pool for my first swim in 3 and a half weeks!!!

I have always loved the water, ever since I was a little girl (in fact, rumour has it that my Dad taught me how to swim by simply throwing me in the pool without my floaties one day!!)

In Sydney I try to swim 3 or 4 times a week, so to get back in the water again was just heavenly.
I frolicked up and down and around the pool for about an hour and then lay in the sun for half an hour.
I had not had a chance to relax like this the entire trip so far. It was absolutely DELICIOUS :D :D :D :D

Plus, I have never swum in a pool with such a view 8) 8) 8)

I walked back to our cottage at 4pm hoping that I wouldn’t wake Dad.
I needn’t have worried. Dad was up and raring to go again :D

So we went out to have a look at the Fossil Trail

After the Fossil Trail we walked to the bird hide to see what was there

Outside the hide we saw a moorhen :D
Image

And a Cape river frog! We’d hardly seen any African amphibians so we were thrilled with this sighting
Image

Inside the hide there was a very impressive swallows nest 8)

By the time we got back to our cottage it was beer o’clock!
So we sat on our stoep and just enjoyed the view….

I love this photo of my Dad :D

I'd take a bet that he was thinking about his gorgeous lady back home, and wishing Katie could be with him to enjoy this experience….

It was a beautiful clear evening for our night drive 8)

Image

I was really impressed with the Karoo camp. It was very well run and all the staff were friendly and helpful :D :D
They even supplied blankets for everyone on the night drive!! :gflower: :gflower:

This was greatly appreciated as it did get rather chilly that night....

Once again, Dad and I were a bundle of excitement, wondering what we would see.

First up kudu and then some mountain zebras!

Image

There were 8 of us on the bus and I was the only one trying to take photos
I started feeling a bit embarrassed, so after the mountain zebra I stopped taking photos.

But I wish I’d got a photo of the aardwolves we saw!!!
In fact, it was a whole family of aardwolves!!
Just amazing

We also saw red hartebeest, steenbok, and an African wildcat 8)

Then all too quickly the drive was over and we were back at camp and into bed by 9.30pm.

I hoped for a good sleep as the next day we were heading to Addo to meet up with Lionspoon and Spots, and RonnieL!!!!   :D :D :D

Karoo to Addo :D

Unfortunately I didn’t get much sleep during the night. I was too excited about the day ahead.
This was to be the day I would meet my dear friend Lionspoon in person!!!

Many years ago when I was a nervous newbie cammer, Lionspoon was always there with encouragement and support :gflower: :gflower: :gflower:
As time went by we developed a real rapport and became great mates 8)

So we hatched a plan to meet in Addo and now the time had nearly arrived.
All Dad and I had to do was complete the drive from Karoo to Addo in one piece

I took a parting photo of the Karoo camp as we headed for the gates and the outside world again.
Image

We saw some amazing scenery on the drive to Addo 8)
Image

But after several hours driving we were so happy to be welcomed to Addo Elephant National Park
Image

At this point I could barely breathe with nerves and excitement.
Just through these gates we would soon meet Lionspoon, Spots and RonnieL!!!
Image

It was about 1.30pm by the time we parked the car at reception. Dad stayed with the car while I went in to get our keys. There was a bit of a queue but finally I got to the counter and it wasn’t long before the lady gave me a big smile and said, “Here are the keys to Rondavel #1 and enjoy your stay”.

As I thanked her and turned to leave a young woman in the queue behind me said “Don’t go anywhere just yet”.

I was a bit perplexed and it took the cogs of my brain a few moments to register what was happening.
OMG, could it possibly be Lionspoon!!!???? YES it was!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

And by then we were embracing and jumping up and down and embracing and just staring at each other in wonder to be finally meeting in person. Even though we were interrupting the check-in process of all the other guests behind us it seemed that they also shared our delight and there were smiling faces all around looking at us

Then it took a moment to realise that Spots was right behind Lionspoon too. So there were more embraces and even some happy tears leaking from my eyes.

How wonderful this moment was!

Eventually of course, we had to get back to practicalities

Lionspoon and Spots still had to check in, and they said that RonnieL was waiting outside reception, so I left them to it and went back outside to meet up with Dad and try to find Ronnie.

I scanned the faces of the people in the carpark. Then I saw a man with a beaming smile walking towards us and yes, it was Ronnie!!! :D :D :D :D :D

We introduced ourselves and by then Lionspoon and Spots had finished checking in and we all stood around talking excitedly. It was close to 3pm by then and I’m pretty sure it was one of our new German friends that suggested we have a Castle

So right then and there we all cracked open a tinnie and toasted to the meeting of forum friends in real life 8) 8) 8)
I don’t think a beer has ever tasted so good, even at that early hour of the afternoon

Over the ceremonial beer-drinking, Lionspoon, Spots and Ronnie told us they had seen lions earlier in the day and asked if we wanted to go and try to find them? DID WE EVER!!!!!

So after finishing our beers we quickly drove to our rondavels, unloaded our gear and set off again to find the lions

Looking for lions

We headed out into the game area in convoy - Ronnie in the lead, me and Dad in the middle, followed by Lionspoon and Spots in their little red Terios (which they had nicknamed the fire engine)

Even though time was short and our main goal of the afternoon was to find the lions, I just had to get a picture of one of the legendary dung beetle signs
Image

And then we saw our first Addo ellie!!
Image

Followed by our first Addo buffalo 8)
Image

A bit further on we saw two cars parked on the road :hmz:
As we drove closer we saw the reason the cars had stopped.

OMW, there was a lion lying right next to the road!!!
My hands were shaking so much from excitement the picture is all blurred
Image

He seemed enormous in relation to the car 8)
Image

As we waited in the car queue to get closer another male appeared out of the long grass on the right
Image

Isn't he just soooooo handsome
Image

And following him was a beautiful lioness. This sighting was just getting better and better!! :D :D :D :D :D
Image

The two lions crossed the road in front of us and then the male started roaring 8)
Image

During the 2 weeks we spent in Kruger I never heard a lion roaring.
It was my Africa dream to hear a lion roaring and now my dream had come true!!

Unfortunately, my camera microphone could not compete with the sound of the wind, and by this time the lion was some distance away, but if you listen carefully, you can still hear this big boy’s roar

After he had let everyone know who was king our handsome big boy flopped down into the grass for a rest 8)
