madach KTP - July 2011

Unread post by madach » Wed Dec 28, 2011 9:45 pm

It's taken me a long time but I've finally started working on my pictures from my July trip to KTP. Like my previous trip reports this will be a purely photographic trip report. It was a productive trip in terms of sightings but my trips in the summer have definitely been more productive. I think the animals move out of the riverbeds and into the dunes in winter because the riverbeds are colder than the dunes. Still we saw plenty of lions, cheetahs, one leopard and lots of general game.

I'm not working on a colour calibrated monitor at the moment so I might have to tweak some of the images later on.

Here's a picture of my two-year old daughter 'helping' me take pictures of a yellow mongoose in Mata Mata camp:

During our trip we stayed at Mata Mata for a couple of nights. The Mata Mata area is my favourite area in the park as the sightings are usually very good there and the waterholes are very good for photography. We weren't disappointed this trip as we had a number of good lion and cheetah sightings around Dalkeith and Veertiende Boorgat. The sequence of pictures below was made near Dalkeith. A mother cheetah was hunting Springbok and for a while it looked promising but I guess all the cars pilling up behind her must have distracted her. After watching a Springbok for close to 15 minutes she sat up and started calling for her cubs. It only took a couple of minutes for four cubs to arrive on the scene  The grass was quite high so photography was challenging. I still got some nice shots though.

Can you spot the cheetah in this picture?
