This morning I decided for Mahonie loop and return to Klopperfontein. In the afternoon, it starts to rain, which is quite rare in the north ... but welcome.

Normal game, then Hamerkop and Broad-billed Roller. At Klopperfontein, that's another story. There is a group of at least six elephants. Three of them play in the water of the pond, I can't get to the water's edge. Two are engaged in a mud bath, and one might be a Big Tusker or a future. I stay as long as possible, until they decide to leave. I can finally go to the water's edge, a pair of Wooly-necked Stork who, obviously, build or built a nest, they are very busy.

Last day ... :(
I go back to Mahonie loop, but in the opposite direction. NOTHING. It's too bushy, and this is the first time that Mahonie does not "give" anything. So I return to Klopperfontein by the highway.
A caterpillar wanders in the middle of the road, it's a little washed out to be a Mopane Worm :hmz: and a Namaqua Dove.
I return to see the storks that are still as busy and I find this Water Thick-Knee (Diktop) comes very close to me ... but stay in the shadow :? I wait a bit ... and finally go back the other way and just in front of me, wonder, a Klipsrpinger cross the road ... where I did not expect, he perched on a small rock to look around and observe me. They are two  and in one minute, I just have time to take a photo or two and... disappear

And again normal game, Zebras, Impalas and again an elephant who will not let me pass, he finally leaves :D

I find this rubbish in the middle of the intersection, it's crazy what people can throw ...

Image

I return to the Mahonie loop, and at last I meet Zebras, nervous as usual, a Green (Redbilled) Wood-Hopoe, an (Eastern) Black Oriole ... and Kudus females.

Back at camp, I ask for a Sunset Drive, there were no the previous evenings ... and with Alfred, who tells us that the loop is deserted and we will go to a more open place. We will not find much, except for this phosphorescent Chameleon :D

Sirheni 28/30.3.2011

The departure of Punda Maria turns into a nightmare  all Vervets (from all the park  ) are installed along the ramp, on the roof above the kitchen and waiting ... wait until I empty the fridge ... there are even those who drop their poop on the table ... a way to mark the territory
I threw everything in the portable fridge, and locked myself into the tent, trying to bring order in this fridge

A Tawny Eagle and Grey Hornbil greet me and I take the road to the South. It 's covered and that's good, the fridge will last longer.

Image

A first, a Village Indigobird (Steelblue Widowfinch) and at Boyela ... this wonderful family, BRAVO to the parents, especially Mom, Dad is not there, to have preserved all its children. The sun made a timid appearance ... in front of me
In 10 minutes everything is again like a desert, right time, right place :D

I'm going to Shingwedzi, there was no more bread and/or fruits at Punda Maria, so I tried the Shinghwedzi's shop. I am looking also for a mouse, mine passed away last night ... and nothing :( Fortunately I have the meat of the previous days and I will do braais at Sirheni.

I return to the north by the small and large loops (S 55 and S 56). I meet Impalas and Storks in the bed of the river, a Buffalo eludes me, Zebras also courageous and beautiful water holes just before the turn of to Sirheni. I promise myself to return in the coming days and I will have much luck

I reach my destination around 15h, take possession of the Unit No. 15. Oh! wonder, what a view
a Black-capped (Blackeye) Bulbul greets me

No time to unload all ... a magical spectacle... a large herd of elephants decided to cross the Dam just in front of my bungalow, it was a field of lilies ... it's now a field of Elephants.

On the few remaining water lilies, one African Jacana, finds something to eat. What a welcome :D

Image

And I watch the first sunset of Sirheni, all trees on the other side ignite. Wonderful, superb, and remains, of course, the trace of the Elephants. At the other side, on my left, Hippos grumble.

I wake up at dawn and "participate" at sunrise and immediately went to explore the area. I will of course along the river Mphongolo (S 56) to the south. I meet Giraffes in the path of Sirheni, there is a lot of them here, and Elephants too... I was surrounding ... once

Image sunrise

In the first small spot of water, down the road, at the bottom, the one I mentioned yesterday, I contemplate and photograph a Kingfisher, a little far, my 400 mm like binoculars and, again, suddenly something in the objective ... I jump, knowing that I'm on the "route" of the Elephants and I am alone, nobody to warn me of danger on the other side and I see happen in a cloud of dust, 100, 200 buffaloes and even more. Magical Vision again, to see these heavy creatures running down the slope, laugh at the rocks, get in the water, some for drinking, some to bathe. There is too a lot of Yellow billed Oxpecker

A Vervet observes everything from the beautiful Fever Tree. And suddenly ... all run away. A Buffalo, even run with a nest

Oh ! no ! don't cry .... :hmz:

cut potatoes in squares, put in half Olive oil, half margarine or something like that (no butter in not good if it's to hot... for the health) and cut one or two onions in fine slices, put the onion when potatoes are almost ready to eat, and 2 min later garlic cutted in tiny squares :D

nothing remarquable

the frying pans in the park... are not exactly do for that....

I remain a little longer, I can't leave this magical place. Arrives, a pair of mating Hamerkop, a Green-back Heron

Image Hamerkop

I continue my journey and meet a giraffe and her makeup, a Village Indigobird
There are plenty of small water points along the route, one of the most beautiful of the park. And of course I come across another large herd of buffaloes along the road and a herd of elephants, all peaceful

Then I return to Boyela by the first small road, which joins the highway. R.A.S....Nothing to report!

I go back by Babalala and return by the S 56.
Around Babalala a road block. The elephant is in the shade, we, the cars, in the sun
and there are still elephants around the tank, and full of Kingfisher

Image

Image Woodland Kingfisher

I return to camp around 13:30, visit it, including hide and return to my wonderful sight
Birds scroll in the small pool, but it is in the shadow  ... and again an African Paradise Flycatcher.
I start the fire, and wait for the sunset. While I eat (it's night) something falls next to me in a strange flap ... a frog, but where does it come from :hmz: ... and as the mongooses and other small rodents it seems to claim to eat
