Unread post by BerkiSA » Sun Jun 12, 2011 10:14 am

Greetings all!

A quick trip report after a fantastic trip to the kruger:

June4- Lowersabie
We arrived in the park at 1Pm and entered through Phabeni gate and then drove the S1, H11 and then H4-1 to lower sabie. During this drive we saw the normal game: elephant, impala, zebra giraffe, waterbuck etc. But a special sighting was a black rhino about 10kms from lowersabie. He was at one stage 1m metre from the car and it was my best black rhino sighting i have had. We spent around 15mins watching the guy but then left to have a late afternoon braai at lowersabie. Nothing beats the 1st day braai in the kruger! Later that evening we had a few irish coffees at the deck and shared some bush stories with the staff, who we very friendly.

June5- Letaba
We left L sabie at 6am and decided to drive the H10 to tshokwane for breakfast. We again saw the normal animals until tshokwane except for three white rhino close the road. On arriving at tshokwane the staff told us of a lion kill 5 Kms from tshokwane along the H1-2. So went to have a look at the kill and got some amazing pictures. The kill was only a few metres from the road and there were cubs, big females and one massive male with a dark mane. Also further around the kill were hyena and other lions! a great 30mins spent watching the feeding until we went for our breakfast! The monkeys at tshokwane seem to be a problem as they raid the food while eating although this can be very funny at times!
We then had an uneventful drive to satara along the H1-4 which yielded buffalo, ground hornbill and a massive herd of waterbuck. We then decided to drive the lonely S90 to Olifants. This is a fantastic drive as it takes you away from the most cars etc. We were lucky enough to see about 20 massive bull elephants at the Bangu waterhole. All the bulls must have been above 3.5 metre at the shoulder and most had massive tusks. We then had a quick stop at olifants before heading to Letaba. At Letaba we had a fantstic grill.
We did the S47 Letaba river road loop at four and saw lots of elephants, buffalo and other game! We had a good dinner at the letaba restaurant and while eating we were fortunate enough to have a clear 15minute sighting of a leopard in the near by fig tree! This completed our "Big5".

June 6- Crocodile Bridge
We saw bush buck early in the morning at Letaba and then left to crocodile bridge. We again saw the normal game and arrived at Olifants for a stunning coffee on the deck with great views! We then arrived at satara and used the day visitors centre to have a fantastic breakfast grill! This is a really great addition to the camp! We then took the S37 dirt road and then S35 on which we saw Wolhuters lion attack tree. Finally we drove to Crocodile bridge where we stayed in tent number 7 which is right by the fence! There were monkeys, warthog and impala in the camp. We had a few drinks before driving to the hippo pools for sunset before returning to camp. We had a final night by braai and had a hyena come to our braai which is a metre from the the fence. Later we had a naughty bushbaby jump from the fence onto our table and steel one of our sandwhiches!

June7-Phabeni Gate
We left Croc bridge early in the morning and then took the H5, then S108 and then S26 to Afsaal for breakfast. Along the S26 we saw white rhino, elephant, hyena and one massive leopard! We had the traders breakfast at afsaal for R38 which includes a coffee!!! We then drove the H2-2 voortrakker road to pretoriuskop and then out at Phabeni. It was very difficult to leave the park! luckily we will be going for 18 days in December so that made the feeling a little better!
