OK so the afternoon drive found us at Duke waterhole. We parked off and a huge herd of buffs came for a drink

Image

Image

Image

Image

as we were leaving Miss Sharifa said Duke

Yes Ma'am

No, Duke Duke.

Yep it was Duke Duke by the reservoir wall. Twice in 3 Days    He had walked from Mlondozi picnic area to Duke waterhole.

30 April 2011

We were first out of the gate and headed south on the H4-2, no Princess :( but a morning for raptors

On the S28 we found a Black Shouldered Kite hovering

Image

Image

Image

Further on we disturbed an African Harrier Hawk (gymnogene) having breakfast

Image

Image

He polished off the chicken and you would think that would be OK for now, but no he was still hungry, but a starling was having none of it

Image

Image

Image

and sends him on his way

Image

also a Brown Snake Eagle

Image

and a tawny

After packing we were on our way to Biyamiti

On the way to Biyamiti on the H4-2, mating pair of lions that were close to the road and unconcerned with all the traffic.

She got up and he followed

Image

and got a telling off

Image

missing part of his ear from a previous telling off

Biyamiti is another of our favourite camps and we just love parking off at Biyamiti Weir. Here are some of the things we saw at the weir during our stay at Biyamiti.

The fish Eagles were in the usual tree

and you can get right below them

Image

Image

a monitor lizard

Image

wooly necked storks

Image

hamerkops

grey heron

and a lone lioness in the river bed

On the afternoon drive there was a traffic jam near the Gezantombi waterhole on the H4-2, caused by 4 very lazy lions

2 May 2011

This is our last day in the park. We were packed and out at 6.00am.

The idea was to go to the weir and then to Renosterkoppies dam where we would have breakfast and then leave the park through Numbi or Phabeni Gate

This turned out to be one of those magic Kruger mornings with Miss Sharifa getting up close and personal  with some of Kruger's predators. Like in your face close

First we were witness to a kill at Biyamiti :D

Image

Image

Three km out of Biyamiti we saw a lone lioness having a jog. :hmz: Wonder if it was the same one that was at the weir the day before (still dark and she was on the move so not the best pic)

Image

At the weir we saw a scrub hare :D

Image

On the S26 at the turn off to the S113 I stopped. I have developed this habit of stopping at intersections and scanning just to see that we are not missing anything and there they were

Image

Soon we were part of the hunting pack

Image

Some odour caught their attention

Image

but also spooked them

Image

Image

but they regrouped

Image

Image

Image

TBC...............

No wild dogs for 12 years and suddenly a feast of doggies in the past 2 trips

Don't know what magic Miss Sharifa was weaving but the doggies came up close to say a personal hello to Miss Sharifa :D

Something caught their attention

Hi Majesty carried on spray marking

Image

Image

Then Sharifa said stop and I thought  but we looking at the lion

She said bee-eater

Image

The King practically "jogged" up the hill. If you know the area around Renosterkoppies it is granite koppies and he raced up this koppie

Image

Image

Image

and when at the top he let out a thunderous roar    MAGIC.

Image

and then sat down

Image

Image

Within a few minutes an OSV was there asking where the lion is as they had heard the roar. We had our fill of his majesty and made way for them as he could only be seen from the one spot

We continued to Nwaswitshaka Waterhole on the S65 where we had breakfast  in the company of zebra and impala.

We then went on to the S1 and near the Nyamundwa Dam we had our third encounter of the close kind for the day

On the Doispane S1 Road we saw a few cars parked off and could make out a lioness between 2 of the cars

Image

There were another 2 cars on the left of the photo which cannot be seen. So we stopped where we were trying to see if there were more lions.

Miss Sharifa's magic was still working as the lioness walked pass the one car and the other 2 and headed straight for her

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

She was just a little bit too close and I closed the window at this stage as Miss Sharifa was too engrossed snapping away

Image

Another great trip.

What a lovely last morning. We left through Phabeni Gate :(

but wait, although this trip is finish the trip report is not......
