Camping nogal!!

Unread postby Vonnie » Mon Apr 05, 2010 3:57 pm

Hold on to your hats folks - the Vonnies are off to the Kruger on the 17th! And the 2 old bats are going to be camping in tents  Never done it before :? but we got a bee in our bonnets to camp!

My son, who is in Italy at the moment, supplied all the gear - tent, beds, chairs, skottel - the worx!

All we have to do is to drive there, without getting lost!

I think that great fun will be had by all - all you have to do is to stay tuned............

Know that the Vonnies only do the Kruger with gusto! :D

I have been driving around for the last 3 weeks with a complete camping kit in my car - I don't have space at home to store it!

Oh, us 2 idiots will be having the times of our lives! We always do! Camping!! Hopefully there will be camping personnel (bless them
they are so such generous, genuine and warm people) to help us construct our shelter! :? :? If not, we might sleep in the car

Yes, it's one of those newfangled dome jobbies! So we are in luck!

Here are the chapters of laughter:
Croc Bridge - 17 & 18 Apr
Pretoriuskop 19 & 20 Apr
Lower Sabie 21 & 22 Apr

We have now established that there is not much space for food, clothes, ice & recreational refreshments left in my car! :) So we will have to wing it - as only we can!

Any creative packing courses happening around Jhb round about now?

Thank you! Dankie! Dankie, thank you! :D

Things are heating up and we are discussing the late night ablution needs  You know when you have to, have to go...........

Posting ourselves close to the public ablution blocks was an option but not always aesthetically pleasing

What measures should the Vonnies be taking?

No liquid refreshments of any sort after 18h00 Vonnie

There is a huge problem right there!! Nudge, nudge - wink, wink!

That is not a viable option!

Thanx for the effort Foxy - but think some more!

We are busy with an inventory of what we could possibly need for survival. Hugh, my sister has a 5L bucket with a tight fitting lid - night time ablutions taken care of! -Tick
She also said that she has a three legged little contraption on which to rest pots, pans, kettles or anything that needs to go on the fire. It has a name. But she cannot remember the name. So, she made a drawing to remind us to take this contraption with - but oh my goodness! :| Upon viewing this drawing, I was convinced that it looked like something obscene! After which she confessed that even her daughter from Oxford maintains that it looks like "'n klein penisie"
So that bloke will be accompanying us then - sigh

Hi

Your little contraption is known as "driepoot" or a tripod.
Some of them have a handle, which is quite convenient.
Some can fold up to save space. They also come in different heights.

Camping is great and there are various contraptions to make life easier. I love to walk around the camp and check the different gadgets that people use.

Thank you everybody for your advice & encouragment! Much appreciated! :D

Don - I received your list! Ja sure, no fine! It is more than I will ever own! No, only joking! Very helpful items there that I would never have considered. This is a huge compliment from a kugel who would much rather enjoy coctails on the patio!

MM - my nails have been prepared! Utilitarian, unpainted and short - feels strange!! :?

Tracylee - I hope I remember to get the ribbon. There is so much that has to be done, bought (you obviously did not see Don's list :D ), prepared and arranged - so let's hope the ribbon is not left behind!

And lastly, thank you for giving our little contraption a more acceptable name!!!

Morning Vonnie
Thanks for reminding me to put the cocktail mixer on the list!! :)
We never take half the stuff on that list, which is simply a reminder of the potential items that we can choose from. I suggest 2 other small lists - if you are going to repeat this adventure from time to time:list what you took and didn't need and what you needed and didn't take.
Looking forward to hearing that you had a gr8 time. :)
THINK WIN-WIN

Hello all!

Big apology for not posting sooner, but I battled for days to log in successfully, phew! I was told to clear my cookies - but we ate them all in the Kruger for breakfast and snacks in the car, so the cookies were in the clear!

Wait for the blow by blow account of our camping expedition - my nails are ruined for life!!!!!!

Thanx all for your intest! :)

We embarked on an impossibly early departure :) - my sister, my daughter and I and a tent with all the paraphanalia!!

We drove and drove and reached Malelane Gate in good time. We did the formalities there and passed through and entered wonderland!!

Our first sighting through the gate was a little group of zebra and some disinterested giraffe grazing (or more politicallay correct browzing) on some green trees with their impossibly long black tongues. We took pics of this, not an unusual combination of wild and proceeded on to camp.

We saw several birds along the way - some ID's could be questioned as none of us claim to be experts - but hey, with the help of Sasol, we went a long way! :)

This is the list of birds that we saw along the way:
Yellow billed hornbill (of course)
Starlings
Lilac breasted rollers (who gave us a stunning flight display!)
A swarm of quelia
Several francolins
Swainsons spurfowl (who was in a rather aggressive mood and one cocky one even flung a leg at our back tyre :)
Bateleur
Guineyfowl (with a law unto their own! All over the road barring all cars from passing)
Some distant siloueted vultures
And lots and lots of others.....

We saw a teeny weeny little hinged tortoise making it's way across the road which was a first for me!

And finally! The gates of Crock Bridge beckoned! :D

Does anyone know what that strange structure that resembles a bushveld tollgate is right outside the gate???

We weren't sure if we had to go there and pay a penalty, make a confession at one of the booths, pay a bribe or just pass with toothy smiles :hmz:

We arrived with great panache and style!

We presented wild cards and were told to pick any open spot! I felt my legs were a bit shaky but thought nothing of it. We drove through to the camping area and then the action started - each one had her own view as to where we should pitch our tent.

I was the driver and was commanded this way and that! I reversed, and turned, reversed again and went backwards and forwards untill all were happy that we were in the right spot.

12:30 Midday - Temp 34C

Tent pitching commenced! I suddenly developed a faintness and could not even hold one of those hinged rods to weave through the tent fabric!
