Elsa, Klystron and Jockelina start a dream holiday

Unread post by Jock » Thu Feb 12, 2009 7:39 am

Well, it is twenty three hours before departure and the long drive to Kruger. Everyone is so excited, and of course family members that are not able to join us a little  .

It should be an awesome trip. 30 days in Kruger. What more could you ask for? (31 days I guess). :hmz: We plan to enter Croc Bridge (if it is open) and drive up and out of Paul Kruger to the time share. A week stay and then we start heading north and end up in Punda Maria before coming South and ending up at the week end cricket.

We are taking our computer with and plan to give you live updates from the park. I am sure they will be great sightings. I am not sure on Elsa or Klystron but I am really hoping to see some big tuskers, sable, maybe an AWC or two and black rhino. A honeybadger would also not be ignored. I am armed with my new camera, a Cannon Power Shot SX10 IS so have an itchy finger and a longing heart.

Looking forward to meeting many wonderful forumites at the cricket and for those that cannot make it, make sure you catch it live on the webcam.
Cheers
Her Highness Jockelina

Jock , I am interested in how you experience your new Canon SX10is , and see it's pic's .
With the 20x optical zoom equal to 18 - 560mm telezoom lens , while still being compact , it sounds GR8 .

We have a Canon 200 - 500 zoom lens but it is just too heavy to hold steady and also inconvenient to leave on permanently or carry around .

If the SX10is is as good as it sounds I am tempted to be a heretic and leave the SLR's with interchangeable lenses to the pro's , and "point and shoot from the hip" with an allrounder .

It's macro close-up ability will also be interesting as that is the main leveler .

Have a wonderfull trip and I am sure it will be quiet with all the hordes back at work .

"Hi from Olifants Camp # 19. Sitting looking at a Giraffe wandering along the river below :D Weather still a bit dodgy with more rain today. Just back from our drive, leopard, lion, elephant and hyena among other things, so a great day. Love to all from the Bush Wackers."

And a big Hi from me, :D
after battling to get on line over the past few days, at last!!!

Thanks to all for the well wishes and nice comments and to those who have so kindly posted my SMS's for me.

We are indeed having a great time, although initially our sightings were kinda scarce because of the extremely dense vegetation down South things seem to be picking up and we are starting to get regular good sights.

Bird ticks and sightings have been incredible and we should have some awesome pics to show when we get back.

We have another 2 nights here at Olifants camp where building alterations are still in full swing but should be great when finished.
River is flowing strongly and looks fantastic.

On Friday we move up to Mopani camp for 2 nights , then on to Punda Maria for 3.

Weather wise it has been pretty cool with a good rainfall over the last 3 days but looks as if it is clearing up at present and the heat is returning. :?

I will attempt to link up where and when I can but in the mean time, take care and cheers for now.
Where ever you go, go with all your Heart.

Well things warming up here in Olifants but only in the weather department. As far as sightings this morning, very quiet however we did see four hyena on the H8. We drove up to the Mantambeni Bird Hide and had some awesome scenes, but very little animals. Even the birding was disappointing today at the hide. Have to go and do some washing of cloths and then we will try our luck again this afternoon.
Cheers

Well we have arrived at Mopani and  wow, what an amazing camp. We are in number 51 with a great view. The sunset was breath taking. Had a really good day on the road overcast all day with some rain and even some thunder around. We found lions on a zebra kill and a leopard a few kms further on the H9 and that was after seeing 7 black backed jackals. (Something we have not seen for a while). Then to make our day complete, we found a big tusker on the H14 just after the Shikumbu hill. Not sure who he is yet, but will find out soon.

We also meet up with Scipio and SO for coffee. It was wonderful to meet them, what an amazing couple.
Cheers

Hi everyone,

just a quick update before we head on out for our afternoon drive, most probably to the Pioneer or Shipandani hides to see what we can find there.

This morning, we took the Tropic of Capricorn loop and found a pride of 8 Lions, looking like they had intentions of making one of the herd of Zebra, WB and Tsessebe their next meal. :?

Lots of great Ellie sightings and plenty of general game which surprised us as we were of the opinion that this area was a bit scarce in that department, but not today. :D

Also saw the sad sight of Alexander's carcass, still a few Vultures hanging around.

Weather still unsettled with heavy clouds hanging around, but no further rain yet.

Last night in Mopani and tomorrow we head off up to Punda Maria for the next 3 nights.

Apparantly there are wild dog reported being seen up at Nkokodzi WH towards Shingwedzi.
Will keep eyes peeled.

Cheers for today.

Hi everyone,

just arrived at Shingwedzi after a wonderful stay at Punda Maria. :D

Went up to Crooks Corner, our very first visit, WOW, what a fantastic part of the park, talk about a tropical jungle, some incredible bird sightings.
Met Frank at Pafuri, got VIP treatment, monkeys are a problem but Frank kept them well away from us while we enjoyed our boerie rolls.
Also showed us the Bohm's Spinetails flying above, a new tick.

Yesterday we got our first glimpses of the beautiful little Sharpes Grysboks.

Met up with SueM and what a super person.
Went on a night drive with her last night and guess what??????
Leopard in the road for 40 minutes!!!!
also Ellies, Buff, numerous nightjars, Owls, scrub hares and the unusual Spring hares.
What a fantastic and informative night drive.

This morning on our way down we saw, wait for it................
2 Roan Antelopes, have awesome pics.
Some nice big tuskers at Boyela WH and then to top it off an Eland.
Does it get much better than that..........

Stopped off at Babalala for a nice brekkie.

About to depart on an afternoon drive so, lets see what transpires?

Weather today is very windy with lots of cloud around, possibly a storm on the way.

Jock and Klystron send best wishes and say Hi to all.

Cheers for now.

Waiting anxiously to see the photo's which we know will be totally awesome. Looking forward to hearing all the amazing stories when you get home. It still seems so far away tho. :? Good luck for the balance of the holiday and hope the sightings keep offering new ticks and once in a lifetime photo opportunities.

Hi everyone,

Now at Leteba for the next 2 nights, was still windy all the way down from Shingwedzi but has calmed down now thank goodness, as it was not conduisive for great bird sightings, becoming pretty hot and humid.

We have chalet # 29, which has an awesome view of the river and to make it even better we have had a huge tusker stroll past down river.
Not sure who he is at this stage, as it seems its not Hlanganini who we thought it might be orginally. :?
Anyway have some great pics so we should hopefully be able to make an ID soon.

Jock is in her element and is currently off to the restuarant deck to try and get some some more pics.

There must have also been at least 150 Marabou storks on the river all afternoon.

What a great time we are having!!!

More updates later.

Hi all,
I get to post the poor days by the look of it. Today we went to Phalabrwa to do our last shopping trip before the cricket next weekend. We took the S131 on the Westward leg and had a filling or two shaken loose. We changed course and headed back to the H9 on one of the low maintenece roads, a lot slower to travel on but not as tooth rattling.
We have also hit a strange sighting, the big ellie Elsa mentioned in yesterdays report turned out to be two ellies with big tusks by the light of day today, so we now have two mysteries to solve. The tusks of both are almost as long as their trunks (and we have the advantage of the elephant museum just near our bungalow for getting info) but they are still not identified. Jock is going in there to do some research tonight.

We have seen minimal animals other than ellies today and are now off on our afternoon drive.

The ellie up river from camp has been identified by Amy at the elephant museum as Hlanganini. We are still working on #2.
