Birthday Bash In KNP : July 2007

Unread post by BIGBOB » Tue Jul 03, 2007 7:56 am

Friday 29/06/2007 saw us arrive at Phalaborwa for my Dad's 75th Birthday at Mopani. It was the 1st time that the whole family were able to get to the park together with their siblings (19 in total). Close to Boulders We were blessed with a Leopard in a river bed it had obviously finished it's sundowner and was heading back into the bush. The Elephants were in abundance on route. We were running against the clock as the gates close soo early in the Winter months so didn't stop long enough to enjoy all the game. Saturday was our family brakfast at Makhadzi and we had an Ellie join us for Omelettes in the bush. Heading North we past Mopani camp road and stopped at the water hole where Buffalo,Elephant,Zebra and Impala were enjoying a mid day drink when we came across Lion just lying in the bush, they were then chased by an Elephant who was on a mission to seek and destroy. Later we went back to the waterhole to find that 7 Lion were watching the Buffalo drinking and it was a first to see that a Buffalo could walk within a metre of the Lion and chase all of them away. Sunday my brother in law spotted the Rhino that was recently located to the area from Skukuza at the waterhole so this waterhole produced 4 of the Big 5 in one day.
Sunday heading down to Satara I was amazed to see how the bush around Letaba's river drive had been destroyed although it was great to see the river more clearly it was a shame to see that the lack of rain has clearly taken its toll. Bush Braai at Satara was fantastic the drive took us down the Sweni loop where we saw in excess of 100 Ellies that were quite distraught as they were trumpeting and very rampant. The braai at N'wenetsi is a must for any visitor we saw a lot of nocturnal animals but sadly no big cats only Wild Cats.
Went out at Paul Kruger gate and the trip brought it's usual rewards. Although the wind was hard we still saw good game, Impala seem to be growing in numbers along the Leeu Drive and saw no Big 5 animals on this drive. Anyway should be back in the Park next week on Business maybe have better luck then
