A week in a very green and wet Kgalagadi TP (2 SA addicts from Holland)

Unread post by Robbert » Sun Dec 03, 2017 3:39 pm

Welcome aboard! So glad you hopped on our bus, thank you, we hope you will enjoy our adventures again! :gflower: :gflower:

We are back in South-Africa!!   It's the 22nd of February 2017 and we have 6 weeks holiday ahead of us. The first week we will spend in the KTP, from there we drive on into Namibia to spend the rest of our holidays.
After a night flight via London we pick up our rental car at OT. Five minutes later we nearly have our first traffic fine  , we missed a stop sign :wall: : welcome in South-Africa  . Fortunately after some social talk to the police officer (we are tired, we have to get used to this car, only picked it up 10 minutes ago, mea culpa, mea culpa    .) we may drive on without paying 600 R.
We spend the night in Potchefstroom, the next day we drive to our friends in Kathu. Just before we enter Schweizer-Reneke we drive over a bridge and see a wide wide river. :hmz: A river? We have never seen a river here! When Ina looks on the map she sees that indeed there can be a river flowing near S-R: It appears to be the Harts. My goodness, so much rain?!?

Image

Lots of swallows fly over the river and under the bridge.

Image

Image

Between Vryburg and Kuruman the road is nearly flooded, streams are flowing left and right, of the road, the grass is as green as we have ner seen it before (only in the Netherlands :D ). We wonder how green the Kalahari will be?

Image

Around half past three we arrive at the farm of our friends, so good to be back again! We spend two wonderful days with them. Rob's favourite pastime is of course taking :cam: :cam: of strange and colourful insects in the garden.

Image

Image

Image

(No more :cam: , :rtm: )

Saturday we say goodbye to our friends and drive to Twee Rivieren, the car packed with our camping equipment and food for the first week. In Upington we buy a few gaz cannisters and drink a strong :lotsocoffee: :lotsocoffee: After filling up the car we drive into the wide and open emptyness. :)
We have never seen the Northern Cape so lush and green. Even the salt lakes between Upington and Twee Rivieren are filled with water!

Image

The sky looks as if more rain will fall!

Image

We get a warm welcome at the reception of TR, the staff recognize us, so good to be back! We find a nice and shady spot on the camp site. After 20 years of camping in SA we finally are the proud owners of a table!! What a luxury, it;s so covenient, how did we manage without one all those years? :hmz:

Image

Around five we go out for a sunset drive. The first animal we see is a red hartebeest, he won't see us....

Image

Springbok and a blue wildebeest in the Nossob river bed

Image

Image

Butterflies at the Samevloeiing waterhole

Image

There are lots of young springbok; they are on the alert... :hmz:

Image

Secretary bird foraging in the high grass...

Image

... as well is a Kori Bustard

Image

Capped Wheatear

Image

juvenile Pale Chanting Goshawk

Image

The BBJ's nearly disappear in the long grass!

Image

The gemsbok look so beautiful in the green riverbed.

What a wonderful start. :D

That really does look an impressive seasonal river. 8) I am sure that it is not often that you can get pictures like that.

Nice creepy crawlies. Super colors.

Great you all hopped on the bus! :gflower: :gflower: We had to rent a bigger one, we had not thought so many people would follow our TR. Look for a comfortable place and be sure to keep your feet dry! It's going to be very wet!!

It's time to go back to the camp. Back at Samevloeiing we see that a huge flock of Abdim's storks has landed in the riverbed. We estimate their number at 70 at least. It always surprises us to see birds you don't expect to see in such a dry region. How do they know the Kalahari is wet and green at the moment? :hmz:

Image

Image

A few minutes later all of a sudden they all fly away, make a big circle and land a bit further again in the riverbed. What's going on? :hmz:

Image

Image

Image

And then we see them.....

Image

Image

Image

The pride consists of a male, 3 females and 3 cubs.

Image

Image

The Abdim's storks are still nearby in the riverbed.

Image

They look quite comfortable, they know the lions are not interested in them.

Image

Image

Bonding...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The sun is setting, the temperature drops and the cubs get playful.

Image

Image

Wow, what a spectacular start of our week in KTP! Just before closing time we enter the gate and we are not the only ones!

We make a quick pasta meal and enjoy the beautiful evening. The sky is really breathtaking here in the Kalahari, the milky way is so brillliant and clear as you never see it in Europe.

It’s really strange to see so much lush vegetation in a desert :hmz: :hmz: . Great pictures.

One of the benefits of visiting these parks at different times of the year is you get to see migrants. Fantastic flock of Abdims storks.

Who wouldn’t want to hop on the bus  :hmz:
