Hi all.

Can't seem to find anything on this animal.

Has anyone seen one in any National Park. What do we know about them? Producing a litter of 1 to 9 they should be found everywhere.

I saw one in our garden some years ago in Ermelo but have never seen one in a national park or any else for that matter.

Taken from Beat about the Bush Field guide by Trevor Barnaby

South African Hedgehogs are different from other species by having five rather than four toes on the hind feet.
They are born with spines just below the skin, moult them at six weeks, then retain the adult spines which offer protection when rolling up.
They are omnivores, eating a wide variety of invertebrates and small vertebrates.
Their main enemy is the Verreauxs' Eagle Owl that peels off the back skin and spines before eating them.

There is another thread "The Elusive Eleven" and the SA Hedgehog is on that.

Several people have listed it as one they've seen.

This little guy/girl lives under the shrubs in our garden (Near Ermelo):

We actually have quite a few of them on the farm but I have never seen them in the Parks either.
Such is the human race, often it seems a pity that Noah... didn't miss the boat.
