any idea?

I thought bush buck, but are the markings strong enough?

Great thread this one.

Never seen an Eland or Hartebees in KNP,but Sable and Rohan have made an appearance or two in the past. My favourite buck has to be the Nyala. That Shaggy coat gets me every time. To me the males look like bearded antelope.

For our trip in May I'm hoping to see any and all of the 5 mentioned before, though I doubt the Eland is possible as we'll only be venturing up to Satara.
To see a sunrise in KNP is to see magic.

We've seen Sable on two occasions. Both times the Talamati herd on 2 different trips. Roan at N'wamba Pan. Tsessebe just outside Babalala, between Pafuri and Punda, next to the Giriyondo road and N'wamba Pan. Suni on a nightdrive from Punda on the Mahonie Loop. With the last one it was good to have it identified and confirmed by the driver.

We still haven't seen Eland and Liechtenstein's in Kruger.

Always a reason to go back. 8)

Roan & Sable sightings

Unread postby Marten » Sun Apr 13, 2014 9:31 pm

Where are the best spots to see Roan and Sable antelope? We saw two Sable at the Shitlhave dam turnoff in September last year, the first in about ten years. Having been a regular visitor for more than 50 years I cannot remember the last time we saw Roan, or maybe I am suffering from memory loss. Will be in Shingwedzi in May and hope to find some Roan.

Marten, have a read through Roan Antelope also Sable
Lots of great info and advice in those as to where they are usually seen.
But from my side Sable are more often seen on the S36 and even down as far as around the Kruger Tablets area.
We have seen Roan mostly above Shingwedzi around Babalala area.
Good luck.

We saw tsessebe and eland (first time for both in Kruger!) about 1km east the Tihongonyeni water hole on the s143. We were extremely lucky to see both at the same time! But trying to get a photo was near impossible, the eland were quite far off to the right hand side, and the tsessebe were standing in grass almost neck height on the left side of the road. But was still an amazing sighting none the less and we spent quite a bit of time there!
Hoping to see some of the others soon though.

Nice sighting indeed, DavidHein. Tsessebe are regularly seen around that waterhole, but the eland is especially excellent, despite being "unphotoable".

If you like your "rare" antelope, like I do then give Mokala NP a try.
We have just had 2 nights there , on way to KTP,and saw many Roan,Eland,Tsessebe, and even Nyala and Blesbok.
We missed seeing Sable but saw Aardwolf on night drive.
Lovely park with great accomodation and staff. having no large predators takes the pressure off having to find a cat!

I can concur with that. We had the most fantastic trip to Mokala last year seeing all sorts of rare antelope. . The pics are in our TR, see below. Mokala is a nugget in itself

So who claims Eland are not photogenic, or are unwilling to ever pose for photographs?
