This is one of three males on a mother and calf buffalo kill on the S90 at the end of November.

Male Lions on the tar road between Orpen and Satara

Unread post by Dave Long » Wed Mar 18, 2015 3:24 pm

On the 2nd March 2015 during an early morning drive from Orpen to Satara we came across three magnificent mature Lions with full manes lying next to the road.
I noticed that one of the three had what I assumed to be a scar on his right buttock, however the "Scar" seemed very symmetrical and I now wonder if this was not in fact a Brand.
Are certain animals branded from time to time instead of being collared.?

I think there’s quite a few ‘branded’ lions in Kruger. I dont know if this an ongoing research maybe? :hmz:

On 2 February 2015 we took plenty of photographs of an older male lion with N1 branded on his right thigh.
If this is an on-going lion research program could one not possibly send this info to the research team?

I think there are quite a few Lions with branded marks and my guess would be that they were part of research into Bovine TB.
I know there was some pics and chat about it in one of the Lion topics in the Mammals Forum.

There is mention of it and a shared sighting here in the Lion topic in Mammals with a suggested reason a few posts further down. I tend to agree that it has something to do with Bovine TB research.

Yes, we have not seen a branded lion as yet, but we have read that there are programmes to monitor certain lions for feline AIDS and bovine TB. Perhaps someone in the know can expand on this topic, and in fact I agree that would it not be beneficial for such lion movements to be reported back to the researchers?

I was surprised by just how short there lifespan is, I expected them to live for years and years, at least until 50 or 60. I do have one question and that is can a Lion, or mostly Lioness, sleep with a back leg in the air ? At lot of the time we see them sleeping and quite a few have one back leg up in the air, are they resting or can they sleep with it up there ?

Stunning video of the Nossob Pride Nico! Thank you for sharing.

Such a shame that the big males were not present as well, but they are superb, nevertheless!

What great memories this sighting brings. How I wish I was in KNP right now.
