Growths on decaying buffalo horns

Unread post by RUG » Sun Oct 15, 2017 2:01 pm

Hello,
Has anyone else ever wondered what those growths are that are found on old buffalo horns? I've only ever seen them on decaying buffalo horns, but never on kudu horns for example. Anyone any idea what causes them?
Please ee the photos to see what I'm talking about:

Caused by a species of horn moth.
They lay eggs on horn and the caterpillars eat the horn.
What you see on the surface are the pupae cases.
Nature never wastes anything!
