Mafunyane Overland 4x4 Trail ?

Unread post by ndloti » Fri Dec 06, 2013 11:21 pm

I heard a talk on RSG radio about 3 weeks ago where a proposed new (vehicle) overland trail was discussed by a member of the HR's - it is called the Mafunyane trail which will operate in the area that was this famous elephants home range .

Any official news from SanParks on this ?
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

HI, Ndloti

It is indeed true that we are planning to open the Mafunyane Trail by 1 April 2014. We are currently in the final stage of this project and will only have a brochure about this trail early next year.

The trail is not yet open. Some of the facilities were used to accommodate the Nyalaland wilderness trail after its facilities were destroyed during the February floods. This prevented the launch of the trail.

The eco trail will open next year, probably in April, after the rainy season.

Visitors may however participate in another rustic experience which utilises some of the overnight facilities:

One of the overnight spots on this route is very popular with the Kruger Rustic bush camp guests.

Mafunyane 4x4 eco trail

Are the overnight campsites on the Mafunyane 4x4 eco trail fenced ? If not, is it safe to sleep in a tent on the ground?

Sleeping on the ground (in your tent) is quite safe. Basically just as safe as sleeping in a rooftop tent, in my opinion.

With the back pack trails we use much smaller one man tents and they are quite safe. Animals do not easily interfere with tents.

We have been running the Kruger Rustic Bush camp for three years now and we have not had one incident where animals threatened anyone in a tent. The majority of our guests use traditional tents.

I have had elephants in and around camp for three to four hours at night, without being the least concerned that they would actually trample the tent I was sleeping in. They just forced me to bed early ... without dinner! :rtm:

If there is an animal coming into camp you just remain quiet and make no movement. They will investigate and move off.

The height of a rooftop tent offers very little real benefit, other than a sense of being removed from the "danger". It however just elevates you to elephant face height ...
