Rain doesn't only fall in Kruger, it also falls in Kgalagadi

I saw cheetahs through the gloom under a camelthorn tree, peering out to see if a springbok was coming along.....

Driving back from Lower Sabie on Monday during the rain was incredible!

All sorts of animals coming on the the tar road to drink- several rhinos, countless impalas, grey duiker, dwarf mongoose.

And at one place a drinking impala had just been taken out by a leopard (who was of course scared off by cars :sniper: ).

Best sighting by far were two Honey Badgers drinking the fresh water  My first Honey Badgers in Kruger.

I was in Satara in November of 2009. It was raining very hard one morning as I drove out the gate at 4:30 am. I took the tar road south and planned on going on the H6, then taking the S41 to the S100. It continued to rain most of the morning and I was not having luck with many sightings. But sometime after I got to the S100 I saw a few cars parked on the side of the road. Two male lions were lying down about 50 meters off the road.

One of them got up and went to a mudhole that was filling up with water to get a drink. After a while, the other male got up and the two proceeded to walk parallel to the road, roaring loudly as they patrolled their territory. For a while the 3 or 4 cars took turns being the first car ahead of the lions. After a little while, the path of the lions began to move away from the road. The other cars turned around and went the other way as the lions disappeared.

But I knew the road turned up ahead and that they might come back towards the road. So I drove around the corner and waited. Sure enough, the 2 lion continued back towards the road, eventually coming directly towards me. One of them came closer and closer, still roaring. He got within a couple of meters of the car and layed down, still roaring.

He was very close and I could feel it inside me every time he roared. One of my favorite Kruger experiences.

I'll add a picture to this post when I get a chance.

We have had a few purple patches during rains, but the one that stood out was between Olifants and Satara a few years back.

It was raining very lightly we first saw baby hyenas right next to the road, then an African Wildcat in the road and a bit further on two female lionesses with four cubs walking in the road. We were the only car around and followed them for about twenty minutes. Magic!

I have always had excellent sightings after thunderstorms, not so much persistant rain.

Few years back we followed a thunderstorm back to Skukuza, we stopped at the kruger tablets with a leopard drinking from the rocks you used to climb over to see the tablets, few km's down, another leopard was walking on the wet road. At the sand river low water bridge a leopard and her 2 cubs were sitting on the bridge getting some sun after the storm had passed there.

In april, after a particularly violent storm, we left skukuza as it stopped, at the T junction to go to Lower Sabie, a leopard was sitting waiting for us there. I suppose I also would not like to walk amongst the wet grass either.

Havent been very lucky when there is lots of wind, not sure the animals like that too much, too easy to get located or busted, depending on what animal you are, but thunderstorms rock

This year in January just opposite the De la Porte water hole near Skukuza we saw a leopard and it was raining softly - brilliant sighting for us but the viewing vans were there in a flash  . And when we entered the Park at Phalaborwa gate a few kilometers from the entrance gate there was a (very) large buffalo herd in the rain, quite heavy rain.

Sightings in rainy weather

Unread post by 123 » Tue Dec 10, 2013 6:14 pm

Hi all

How do you spend your days in Kruger on rainy days like we currently have?
Is it worth driving around, or do you keep busy indoors with games etc.

What success have you had in rainy weather?

We have had lots of success driving around the park in the rain, we saw the following sightings all in one morning on our way out of the park, first a pride of lions, right next to our car (we shared the sighting with another vehicle), a leopard in a tree (we were the only vehicle) and 2 cheetah brothers lying under a tree (we were the only vehicle) :D :D

A couple of years ago I experienced a very rainy December.

A few of my sightings.

A shy side striped Jackal between Transport dam and Prerorius Kop.

Four Leopards in twenty minutes. I was on my way to Lower Sabie in very overcast weather. To my amazement I passed two mating couples in the space of twenty minutes.

an indication of the rain..

Later on I saw this

The car travelling behind the lion was our forumite Sparrow. Also a good sighting.

Rainy weather is often cat weather, unless the rain is too hard. What a wonderful gift package, MM.   That's the pleasure, and sometimes huge surprise, that Kruger dishes out.

@ You have just the right name too, Cape of Storms, for rainy weather beauties.

Have to agree, I have had great luck in rainy weather, I have had Cheetah, Lion and Leopard sightings. You can often see Lions in the road during rain or after rain because moving in the road is much easier than walking through wet, thick bush!

Good luck for your trip, I hope you have a great one
