The increase in visitors will nearly double with a ~ 70% increase. Just wonder what will happen to the roads, fuel supplies, water etc. at 100 % occupancy.

Agree 100%. That's what all the I&AP submissions were about.

Re: Developments planned for the KTP

Patries, there are still campsites at both Rooiputs and Polentswa. You might be able to see the lodge at Rooiputs, depending on which site you get. The Polentwa lodge is out of sight of the campsite, though no. 3 campsite is right on the road towards the lodge, making no 1 or no 2 a better bet if yo...

Re: Gus Mills Guide to KTP

The publisher, Black Eagle Media, was declared bankrupt on 31 October. But the bad boys here are m (part of Ramsay Media, which publish Getaway, Car magazine, Popular Mechanics and Leisure Wheels). They have taken money from people and are not supplying the goods. They're referring complaints to the...

Re: Von Weilligh's baobab

Thanks, Elsa, I had a look at the Baobab topic and there's nothing specific. RemiE, you're probably right - elephants have taken exception to the graffiti and removed it over the last 120 years!

Re: Von Weilligh's baobab

At the time, though, I didn't know that there was this 1891 graffiti on the tree, so I didn't look for it. What I really want to know is whether the graffiti itself can be seen from your car, or whether it's on the far side of the tree, which would mean you'd have to get out of your car and approach...

Re: Gus Mills Guide to KTP

Since it's published by Africa Geographic, maybe you have to be an AG subscriber to get the discount?

Von Weilligh's baobab

Can you see Von Weilligh's graffiti (initials and the date 1891) on the baobab along the S93 between Letaba and Olifants from the road? Or would you need to be on foot? If anyone has actually seen it from the road without doing the illegal thing and getting out of your vehicle, I'd love to hear from...

Thanks, lion queen, that snippet usefully pegs the time during which he lived in the area.

Looking for info on Tshokwane the Muti Man

I'm intrigued by the snippet on SANParks' website: "Tshokwane was a Man of Muti. The picnic site bearing his name is ideally situated ..." blah blah. I'm sure we all know the picnic site well, but does anyone know where I can find out more info about the man it was named after? My curiosit...

Re: Developments planned for the KTP

When I was in KTP recently and saw the Rooiputs Lodge, which already has its thatch roof on, I had two reactions. First, it looked low-key and didn't have a massive a footprint - that's the positive. Second, and much more negative, was: why couldn't it have been built a bit further from the road and...

Re: Riverbed cycle challenge: Union's End to Nossob

Thanks for the feedback, Gabrielle. Given that Augrabies already has cycling as one leg of the Gariep 3-in-1 Trail, this seems to make a lot more sense as a venue than the Kgalagadi wilderness area.

Re: Gus Mills Guide to KTP

As far as I know, there's been an unexpected delay because the publisher it was with closed down that division so Gus had to find another publisher. He has now done so, but it's a slow process so we're going to have to be patient.

Re: Wildlife and travel magazines, do you subscribe?

I'm a Getaway and Go fan, but I can't believe nobody has mentioned Wild mag, which is my all-time favourite. Do people just take it forgranted because we're Wild Card members? It recently picked up three well-deserved Pica Awards. I also enjoy its blog page http://www.wildcard.co.za/blog.htm I also ...

Re: The Last Rhinos. Lawrence Anthony with Graham Spence.

I agree with everything that's been said about Lawrence Anthony, the man and his work. I loved The Elephant Whisperer but, despite the important message in The Last Rhinos, I can't say I enjoyed it nearly as much. That may have something to do with the fact that the ghost writer on the two books was...

Re: Riverbed cycle challenge: Union's End to Nossob

I doubt if the event will be supported that well if it is staged outside the Park. SANParks is interested in revenue and the cyclist wants return on investment - i.e. having the unique opportunity to ride IN the Park. Supporting the local community of say Ascham or Welkom is a noble idea but ...[t]...
