Re: In Kruger now w/ no international tourists

We are vaccinated, and will travel from the US to the Kruger in June. We will need a negative test to return, and I found a place in Hoedspruit which will handle the test within the 72 hour window we have available: Ampath Labs m We have a late return flight, and I know there is a lab at OR Tambo ai...

Caracal statue at Satara

I noticed the statue that used to rest in a small cluster of trees on the lawn at Satara (right in front of the waterhole) was taken down sometime before August 2017. I asked the forum shortly after, and it seemed that it was being repaired or cleaned. Does anyone know if it was repaired and placed ...

Re: What song reminds you of Kruger

In a related vein, when were are in the park we have been working on short parody songs for each of the animals we see- keeps our daughter equally entertained and embarrassed (which is the important thing) We have "Vervet Monkeys" to the tune of "Hey Hey we're the monkees" hey he...

Re: Rain in Kruger

Jesscan,

Thanks for posting those. In addition to relief that the park is getting a good soaking, I love seeing these pictures. We never get to see the park during the rains- we have to visit in winter.

did Kruger ever have watch towers?

I was watching an 1950's travel video with a section on Kruger. In it they have a scene depicting people climbing a watch tower to view game. Was this ever done in Kruger, and if so where?

Re: Restaurant operators at Satara, Olifants and Letaba Camps in the Kruger National Park

We spend 18 days in the park in July/August. We ate at most of the Tindlovu restaurants, as well as the Wimpy, Cattle Baron and Mug & Bean. I was basically happy with all of them. Some of the Tindlovu restaurants have a few added items: Pizza at Satara, amazing smoked meats at Letaba, and maybe ...

a different Hemingway Africa quote

I keep a copy of the well known quote "I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up and was not happy" above my computer as motivation. I was recently re-reading The Green Hills of Africa when this quote jumped out at me: "All I wanted to do was get back to Africa. We had not le...

was the Caracal statue removed from Satara?

There used to be a statue of a caracal in the little grove of trees in front of Satara's restaurant/shop. My daughter would visit the statue while waiting for lunch or dinner. We last saw it in November 2016. When we visited in August it wasn't there. Does anyone know if it is gone for good, or if i...

Sick child at Skukuza

I know this might not be a great topic for the forum, but the answers we get will be useful for other visitors. We are at Skukuza for the next 3 days. 36 hours ago our eight year old daughter developed a moderate 37.8C fever, and very bad pain in her legs. The fever has stayed unchanged, but the pai...

Re: Shopping en route to Kruger.

What cuts of & kinds of game might be available which should we sample to braai? In the camp stores you will find impala (marinated), kudu, wildebeest some others. Usually smaller cuts, for stews or as kebabs (sosaties) and some steaks. There are usually kudu or other game boerewors. Our tradit...

Re: Phone usage with a USA phone?

For what it is worth, I have a T-Mobile plan that offers free data and text from South Africa. In the park I have access to the Vodacom network, and a good transfer rates in all of the camps I stayed at. I think you could get by with a data package from your current plan, and communicate via text. I...

Re: Roads around Berg en Dal

You are right, in that you can only head north on S110/S120 to the H3, or south on the S110 to the H3. However, there are a number of loops you can do on the east side of the H3. I usually head north in the morning, do one or more of the loops, and come back on the southern leg of the S110. It is no...

Status of Afsaal after May 2016 shutdown

I loved seeing the pictures of the new Tshokwane. Wasn't Afsaal shut down for kitchen rework at the same time? What is the status of Afsaal in November? At one time that was my favorite picnic stop, but it seemed that every year something else would be missing. The wagon, the owl, things from the sh...
