Arid Cultural Event and exhibitions

This year the Arid Cultural Event, was nothing sort of pure cultural grandeur. The Arid region, which includes Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Augrabies Falls National Park, Namaqua National Park, |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park and Mokala National Park has for the last seven years held this flagship regional event in partnership with the Dept. of Economic Development and Tourism of the Northern Cape Province (DEDAT). The department has proven to be a worthy partner over and over again. 

Fun filled Penguin Festival for African Penguin Awareness Day in Table Mountain National Park

20 September 2016 - On 8 October, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) and South African National Parks (SANParks) are hosting the annual Penguin Festival at Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town to celebrate African Penguin Awareness Day. The day is dedicated to raising worldwide awareness about the plight of the endangered African penguin, the only penguin endemic to the African continent.

Garden Route National Park extended SA National Parks Week to 17 September 2016

Over 4,900 people visited the Garden Route National Park during this year’s SA National Parks Week. This is in excess of 1,500 more people than the previous year (2015).SA National Parks Week campaign in the Garden Route progressed for 7 days to allow neighbouring communities to have free access into the Garden Route National Park. The week long campaign which is financed by FNB and Total SA kicked off with a launch of a cycling route suitable for the whole family (a 7,5 km long route) in the middle of the forest in Goudveld, a few kilometers from the town on Knysna.

Launch of the gold nugget cycling route

The gold nugget cycling route was launched on Sunday, 11 September 2016 in Goudveld, Millwood. The Park Manager for the Garden Route National Park, Paddy Gordon says "we are finding creative ways to make people feel more welcome in the Park during SA National Parks Week. If cycling is the new golf, then we have found ways to upgrade existing trails to suit the entire family."

Media Release: Local tourist involved in an accident in the Kruger National Park

<p>A white Ford sedan driven by a male local tourist from the Limpopo Province overturned on the H1/4 road, about 8km north of Satara yesterday, 06 September 2016 at about 14:00. It is not known yet what the cause of the accident is; a helicopter and local doctor went to the scene of the accident to attend to him. The driver sustained injuries and was airlifted to a medical facility in Nelspruit for further treatment.</p>

Exploring "untouched unique places"

<p class="leading">Research conducted by South African Tourism in 2007 indicated some 5 million citizens had the means and the desire to travel. This led to a campaign to encourage locals to visit their country more often. There is a desire from global travellers to venture more into "untouched and unique places" according to a popular global blog (treksoft.com). Travellers are on the lookout for unique and original experiences.</p>

African Spirituality Weekend - Meet the traditional healers

<p>Golden Gate Highlands National Park will be hosting an African Spirituality Weekend from 16 - 18 September 2016.&nbsp;A celebration of South Africa&rsquo;s living heritage and indigenous knowledge systems; the event which is a partnership between SANParks, WILD and the Sesiyakhula Njalo organisation involves an exploration of ancient African traditions and spiritual beliefs.</p>

South African National Parks (SANParks) resources dispatched to assist neighbours

<p class="leading">South African National Parks (SANParks) in the Garden Route National Park (GRNP) dispatched resources to help fight a fire that broke out from neighbouring private property on Saturday, 27 August 2016. Park Manager of the GRNP, Paddy Gordon says "the fire started on private property and has spread through a wide landscape. Our teams are deployed on three flanks to assist the fight in the Knysna area to protect the fire from spreading to Buffelsnek and in Tsitsikamma areas."</p>

Media Release: Oil slicked penguins removed from Addo Islands

<p class="leading">Over the past two days, 45 penguins have been rescued off Bird and St Croix islands, which form part of the Addo Elephant National Park, after an oil spill adjacent to St Croix on Sunday 14 September 2016.</p>

SA National Parks Week in the Garden Route National Park

<p class="leading">This year&rsquo;s South African National Parks Week in the Garden Route National Park (GRNP) begins on Sunday, the 11th September until Saturday, the 17th September 2016. The campaign encourages all South Africans to visit National Parks around the country. The Garden Route will open the campaign week with the launch of the Gold nugget cycling route in the Goudveld area on Sunday, the 11th September 2016 from 10:30am.</p>

<p>The devastating March 2015 fires which burnt Upper Tokai plantation have refocused the public&rsquo;s attention on the future of the area. Over the past few months a range of letters, opinions, sms&rsquo;s, advertisements and campaigns have been published and aired in the media and other platforms on the safety issue and status of remaining plantations in the Lower Tokai area of the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP).&nbsp;</p>

<p>A raging fire propelled by berg winds of up to 48km/hr lef t a trail of destruction in Wilderness on the 11th August with four homes lost. &nbsp;At a meeting held on 23rd August in Wilderness with the affected homeowners - George Municipality, Eden District Municipality, SANParks and &nbsp;the Southern Cape Fire Protection Association (SCFPA) again extended their sympathies to those who lost homes and possessions.</p>

Golden Gate Highlands National Park to host a weekend of African Spirituality

<p>SANParks is most renowned for the protection of the biodiversity of flora and fauna in its 22 parks; lesser known is that it also has as its primary mandate, the protection and promotion of South Africa&rsquo;s cultural heritage. Several of the parks under SANParks&rsquo; management have significant spiritual, cultural and historical status with several boasting archaeological and heritage sites.</p>

Ecological block burn for Harkerville

The planned ecological block burning postponed from last year for the Harkerville area is set to kick off tomorrow (16th August 2016). So says Area Manager for Knysna, Johan de Klerk, "fynbos is a vegetation type which is adapted to fire and more so, dependent on fire.  Many species only recruit after a fire as fire stimulates seed release and germination. Without fire, there would be no fynbos."

GRNP/EMI Awards 2016 in Tsitsikamma

The Garden Route National Park honoured staff on Friday, 12 August 2016. The event was held at the Cattle Baron Restaurant's deck in Tsitsikamma where 140 people attended including the Chief Operating Officer of SANParks-Ms Lize McCourt, Senior General Manager-Jill Bunding-Venter, GRNP Park Manager- Paddy Gordon and other guests.  68 rangers qualified as Environmental Management Inspectors according to NEMA's Section 31 B and C of 2008.
