The Garden Route National Park (GRNP) team has complied fully with the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METTs). An audit conducted last quarter through an Internationally recognised tool to measure management effectiveness of protected areas (METTSs) prove SANParks is managing the GRNP effectively.
In what is potentially a major boost for sustainable development in South Africa, the CEOs of South African National Parks (SANParks) and the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Green Fund, have announced the findings of a two-year pilot that has demonstrated conservation as a growing and value-adding sector within rural development at the Development Bank of South Africa in Midrand on Tuesday, 4 April 2016. SANParks CEO Fundisile said, “whilst traditionally conservation is regarded by many as a ‘trade-off’ with development, the pilots have shown that conservation can actually competitively lead and stimulate development.”

2 April 2016 - The Karoo National Park’s recaptured lion is back in the Park’s boma and doing well.
South African National Parks (SANParks) and the Table Mountain Mountain Bike (TMMTB) Forum have over the past few months been revising the current 2002 cycling Environmental Management Programme (EMP) for the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP). A draft of the revised EMP will be released for public comment on Monday, 4 April on the TMNP and TMMTB Forum websites while hardcopies of the report and maps will be available at various libraries throughout the Cape metropolitan area and selected TMNP offices.
The South African National Parks (SANParks) search team has successfully darted the escaped lion from Karoo National Park outside Beaufort West. A veterinarian is present at the scene with the re-captured lion at the moment.
South African National Parks (SANParks) will be deploying another helicopter to assist in the search for the escaped lion near Karoo National Park.

The Kruger National Park (KNP)’s Phabeni Gate and the road portion between S1 and S3 (from the Gate to intersection which leads to Numbi Gate) reopened Friday, 18 March 2016 for tourists, after they were temporarily closed on 9 March due to the low water bridge which was damaged by heavy rains.

A bakkie with three tourists from the United Kingdom i.e. male and two females collided head on with another which had four local occupants in the Kruger National Park (KNP) yesterday, 10 March 2016 at about 10:00 on the S60 gravel road; about 3.8km away from Punda Maria Camp. The two drivers and all passengers on both vehicles sustained injuries and were rushed to the nearest medical facility outside Punda Maria.
Media Release: SANParks donates another State of the art Science laboratory to a school in Thabazimbi
Limpopo - On Thursday 10 March 2016, South African National Parks (SANParks) joined by the Department of Education in Limpopo celebrated the handover of a new state of the art science laboratory to Groenvlei Secondary School in Thabazimbi.
A SANParks ranger, Siviwe Nondobo was out collecting dung boli measurements for our scientists working on terrestrial mammals including the Knysna elephant, Lizette Moolman van der Vyver. On his way there, he first saw a caracal and then later Oupoot herself. Yesterday, field workers from MTO saw the elephant and took pictures of her.
Following the substantial rain which fell on 8 March over most of the southern part and catchment area of the Park; the situation at the moment is that water has subsided, with Sabie and Sand River low water bridges which were overflowing now open (on road H1-2 between H4/1 - H12). Flights in and out of the Skukuza Airport are also operational as normal.

Media Release: Prescribed burning in the Table Mountain National Park due to take place in coming weeks
Table Mountain National Park is in the process of obtaining a burning permit to conduct a number of biodiversity burns in various sections of the Park. These prescribed burns will take place between March and April 2016 under favourable weather conditions i.e. temperatures under 25°C with moderate winds of less than 20km/hr and 2-3 days after light rain has fallen.
