Cycling Open Day

The Garden Route National Park (GRNP) and Muddy Foot Adventures are organising a cycling fun race with a difference for Saturday, 07 November 2015. Using the Route Book (Rally Style) and odometers to navigate, each team follows the prescribed route and visits strategically located checkpoints on the course.

Calling all tour operators, travel agents, conference organizers, secretaries and PA’s, the South African National Parks (SANParks) Roadshow, an annual event, is planned for the 12th, 14th and 15th of October 2015. SANParks will visit three cities in three days, starting in Johannesburg at the Indaba Hotel then moving to Durban at the Garden Court Marine Parade and finishing off in Cape Town at the Garden Court – Nelson Mandela Boulevard. 

Biodiversity campaign kicks off in Tsitsikamma

SA National Parks Week draws more than 4000 visitors to the GRNP

A total of 4, 383 South Africans visited the Garden Route National Park (GRNP) during SA National Parks Week 2015, a campaign sponsored by FNB and Total SA.  1619 visited Knysna (approximately 350 were brought in by the Featherbed Company via a cruise in the Knysna estuary which is also in the GRNP), 1567 Wilderness and 1197 Tsitsikamma.

South African National Parks (SANParks) will now be offering senior citizens discounts on certain activities in several National Parks around the country. South Africans aged 60 years and older can now benefit from a 40% discount, during specific periods, on guided games drives.

SA National Parks Week launched in Knysna

The SA National Parks Week campaign was launched in Harkerville (Knysna) on the 14th September 2015. Speaker of the Eden District Municipality, Doris Nayler gave a message of support in favour of such a week during Tourism Month. CEO of Knysna & Partners (former Knysna Tourism), Greg Vogt also mentioned a few initiatives in Knysna and said SANParks are a key partner in driving the tourism business.

Media Release: Kruger National Park rangers receive quad vehicles for patrol

The patrolling of the Kruger National Park (KNP)’s terrain keeps evolving as the Ranger Corps received 10 quad vehicles; as part of the ‘ground mobility’ capacity and support in the anti-poaching operations inside the Park today, 14 September 2015. Funding for six of the quad vehicles was made possible through the US based Howard G Buffet Foundation (HGBF).

In an effort to promote access to the natural beauty that South Africa has to offer, South African National Parks (SANParks) in partnership with First National Bank (FNB) and Total South Africa has opened the 10th official South African National Parks Week. The week, opened by the Minister of Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa begins tomorrow, the 14th of September and will end on Friday the 18th of September. Under the established theme “Know Your National Parks,” it will allow free access to the majority of national parks under SANParks management.

Free access to the Garden Route National Park

South Africa National Parks Week is a campaign to afford all South African citizens free access to National Parks. It is sponsored by FNB and Total SA. More than 4000 people visited the Garden Route National Parks last year (including Wilderness, Knysna and Tsitsikamma). Dates for the campaign week start from the 14th – 19th September 2015.

South African National Parks (SANParks) is again opening its doors for free from Monday, 14 September until Friday, 18 September as part of the annual South African National Parks Week. This campaign under the established theme ‘Know Your National Parks’ will allow locals with valid identity documents an opportunity to spend a day at a national park of their choice, free of charge.

Update after the recent rains in the Garden Route National Park

Although rivers in the Tsitsikamma section of the GRNP are relatively full subsequent to recent rainfall, all day and multi-day hiking trails are now open including the world famous Otter trail hike. Water in the Natures Valley camp has also subsided. According to Area Manager of Knysna (GRNP), Johan de Klerk "roads in the forestry areas in Knysna (Kom-se-Pad) are drivable and trees, debris, water cleared."

Latest update on the floods in Garden Route National Park

Rangers are assessing the extent of the damage caused by the recent rainfall. Goudveld, Gouna and Jubilee Creek (all in the forestry areas) seem to be the hardest hit. In addition to the 100mm rainfall on the 1st of September morning, an additional 40mm was measured. "This has caused damage in Goudveld (an old mining town in the middle of the forest) and a nearby popular picnic spot (Jubilee Creek)" according to Senior Section Ranger, Dominique du Toit.
