South African National Parks (SANParks) is again opening its doors for free from Monday, 14 September until Friday, 18 September as part of the annual South African National Parks Week. This campaign under the established theme ‘Know Your National Parks’ will allow locals with valid identity documents an opportunity to spend a day at a national park of their choice, free of charge.

Update after the recent rains in the Garden Route National Park

Although rivers in the Tsitsikamma section of the GRNP are relatively full subsequent to recent rainfall, all day and multi-day hiking trails are now open including the world famous Otter trail hike. Water in the Natures Valley camp has also subsided. According to Area Manager of Knysna (GRNP), Johan de Klerk "roads in the forestry areas in Knysna (Kom-se-Pad) are drivable and trees, debris, water cleared."

Latest update on the floods in Garden Route National Park

Rangers are assessing the extent of the damage caused by the recent rainfall. Goudveld, Gouna and Jubilee Creek (all in the forestry areas) seem to be the hardest hit. In addition to the 100mm rainfall on the 1st of September morning, an additional 40mm was measured. "This has caused damage in Goudveld (an old mining town in the middle of the forest) and a nearby popular picnic spot (Jubilee Creek)" according to Senior Section Ranger, Dominique du Toit.

Warning: People to not cross fast flowing rivers in the forestry areas (GRNP)

SANParks managers of the Garden Route National Park have requested citizens to not cross fast flowing rivers in the forestry areas of the Park. "The Piesang River in the Knysna Forest is flooded, so are most rivers" according to Johan de Klerk (Area Manager of the Knysna section).

Media Release: Exciting planned upgrades will not hamper visitor experience

The very first upgrades in Tsitsikamma as part of the +R 17 million project will start with the entrance gate and administration building. Good news is visitors will not be affected by this at all. "The plan is to vacate the existing office building before December" explains Area Manager for Tsitsikamma, Lesley-Ann Meyer. Roll out of the Project will be the new Office Block closest to reception, then once that’s completed, work on the entrance gate will begin.

Garden Route National Park Awards 2015

The 2015 Garden Route National Park Awards were held at the Simola Hotel on the  20th of August 2015. SANParks introduced Regional Awards in an effort to not only motivate its staff, but to recognize and honour those who commit themselves to a matchless level of excellence in performing their duties. In attendance was the Deputy Mayor of Knysna, Esme Edge, Mrs South Africa contestant, Jackie Wilson Louwe (who was a co-Master of Ceremony with a Senior Marine Ranger for Knysna-Owen Govender), Managing Executive of Parks, Dr. Mvusy Songelwa, Honorary Rangers from Knysna (Chairperson, Bayden Hall) and other distinguished guests.

Media Release: Post-fire rehabilitation update in Table Mountain National Park

Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) takes pleasure in announcing the re-opening of certain burnt areas which had been closed off to the public.  The areas had to be closed off following the March fires for the safety of visitors, and to allow natural systems to recover.  Restoration work started immediately after the fire with attention to both restoring access as well as the natural elements. TMNP Management was encouraged by the general compliance to these closures and appreciates this patience with the restricted access.  Now, five months after the fire, fynbos recovery is showing great progress and mountain lovers can once again look forward to their favourite hikes and to see the wonders of fynbos.

Media Release: KNP helicopter lands safely after engine failure

One of the Kruger National Park (KNP) helicopters with three park officials on board went looking for two rhinos, which were believed to be outside the Park west of Orpen Gate yesterday (18 August 2015). The female rhino and her calf were observed outside the park; and a helicopter was dispatched to locate the animals in order to guide the Game Capture team on the ground.

As of this morning, 6 August 2015, police confirmed that the protests in Phalaborwa have been suspended and the situation is currently calm. Visitors to/from the Kruger National Park can once again make use of the Phalaborwa Gate.

Phalaborwa Gate inaccessible due to protests on R71 Road

Guests of Kruger National Park are hereby informed that Phalaborwa Gate is currently inaccessible due to protests by communities in the Ba-Phalaborwa area on the access roads such as R71 (leading to Phalaborwa Gate) taking place since Sunday, 2 August 2015. The protests have so far resulted in some vehicles burnt, schools & businesses affected and temporarily closed. Guests are advised to use alternative gates such as Orpen or Punda Maria to access and exit Kruger National Park until further notice.

Rare bird alert in Table Mountain National Park

On the 3rd of August 2015, news trickled through of an odd bird seen at Perdekloof Picnic Site near Cape Point in Table Mountain National Park (TMNP).
