Media Release: Head honchos of global conservation to meet in Skukuza

Date: 2010-08-13

South African National Parks (SANParks) will be hosting the World Protected Areas Leadership Forum from 16-19 August 2010, at Skukuza in the Kruger National Park (KNP) . Delegates from Kenya, Finland, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) will be participating in this forum along with the heads of the various divisions within SANParks.

The forum aims to provide an opportunity for heads of parks and protected area agencies to discuss issues of mutual interest and share information. Speaking from SANParks Head Office in Pretoria, Dr David Mabunda, the convenor of the forum, said: “we are looking forward to enhancing our understanding of the global methods and challenges through this meeting and sharing our own experiences and successes with our counterparts.”

Among the topics to be discussed by the South African delegates are large mammal management, land claims and Trans Frontier Conservation Areas. The Australian delegate will also discuss the changes in management of Protected Areas following the Crown settlements with First National people while other presentations will be made on topics such as spatial prioritization methods in protected areas and advancing business approaches to parks management.

The chairperson of the IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Nik Lopoukhine, will also be in attendance and part of the forum will include a review of the IUCN Protected Area as well as preplanning and initial dialogue around the 2014 World Parks Congress.

“As conservation agencies in different countries, we each have an interest in the global conservation agenda and coming together at a platform such as this will provide us with an opportunity to pave a united way forward for parks and protected areas within this global context,” said Dr Mabunda.
