Media Release: SANParks Marine Rangers confiscate abalone and arrest suspect

16 March 2010

During a joint operation between South African National Parks (SANParks) marine rangers from Addo Elephant National Park and Marine & Coastal Management (MCM), a male suspect was arrested after being found in possession of abalone on Wednesday night, 10 March 2010.

SANPark marine rangers received information that a well known abalone poaching syndicate would be dropping off abalone by boat at Swartkops River in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday evening. At 10.15pm a boat arrived and a bakkie was waiting for the poachers. SANParks marine rangers and MCM then went in to make the arrests. The boat sped away and the divers ran off and escaped.

A white Ford Courier bakkie was seized and a 23-year-old male arrested. A crate containing 8 waist dive bags was found on the bakkie, which contained 2 588 abalone, with an estimated value of R145 000. Two scales were also found on the bakkie and the abalone weighed in at 290 kg’s.
