To celebrate the Kruger National Park (KNP) 109th Birthday, all South Africans that share the same date of birth will be given the chance to enter an exciting competition.

“It is our birthday and we would like to share this special day with fellow South Africans. So if your birthday is on May 31, please enter this exciting competition and, if your entry wins, we’ll see you then! E KNP Ziwa-Mo!” said the KNP’s Executive Director Dr Bandile Mkhize.

On Tuesday May 31, 2007, the KNP will celebrate its birthday at the oldest formal tourism camp in the park – Pretoriuskop Rest Camp – and the 15 lucky winners of this competition will celebrate their birthdays together with the KNP on this date at this function.

To enter the competition, entrants will need to answer three easy questions and supply a certified copy of the front page of their identity document (to prove their birth date) plus a contact telephone number and fax this entry to “The KNP Birthday Competition” on 013 735 4010 before 12:00 on May 25.

The three questions are:

1. What is the name of the first camp that was opened to the public in the Kruger National Park?
2. How old is the Kruger National Park on May 31, 2007?
3. Complete the sentence: “The Kruger National Park forms part of _ _ _ Parks.”

The first 15 correct entries submitted will receive the following: accommodation for two nights for two people in Pretoriuskop on May 30 and 31, which includes Conservation Fees, a game drive, breakfast and dinner and R1 000 to assist with transport costs to the KNP.

Research has shown that President Paul Kruger’s Volksraad (parliament) established the Sabie Game Reserve during 1898. The National Parks Act – the previous act of parliament that governed national parks in South Africa – was ratified before parliament on May 31, 1926 and thus it has decided that May 31 is the KNP’s birthday. The KNP is the largest and oldest park administered by South African National Parks (SANParks).

Full information details are available on the SANParks Website ( or contact The KNP’s Tourism and Marketing Department on 013 735 4215 between 07:00 and 16:00.
