Southern Africa will experience a total eclipse of the sun on 4 December 2002. Very few areas in the country fall within the totality path. There are four areas within the Kruger National Park that fall within the path. These are: Punda Maria Gate, Punda Maria, Mopani and Shingwedzi.

There have been several articles written in the media regarding the eclipse, the fully booked accommodation in the Kruger National Park and the pre-selling of units in the totality area to foreign scientific "scientific interest groups".

SANParks is also aware of the dissatisfaction expressed by members of the public regarding their unsuccessful attempts to book prime spots in the camps for that day. There have been a lot of questions raised about the way in which bookings were handled, and the insufficient explanations given regarding the issue.

The Chief Executive Officer of South African National Parks, Mr Mavuso Msimang will address the media at a press conference on Monday, 28 January 2002 at the SANParks Head Office in Pretoria at 14:00.

It is the CEO’s aim to clarify all these issues at the press conference, and also to inform the media and the South African public, on measures that are being put in place to make sure that more people can access the park on the day of the eclipse.

Date:    28 January 2002
Time:    14h00
Venue: SANParks, Groenkloof
              643 Leyds Street
