Media Release: Commission of enquiry into the Kruger National Park Fire

The commission of inquiry into the fire in the Kruger National Park on September 4th 2001 is set to begin on the 6th May 2002, chaired by Nelspruit Chief Magistrate Mr David Ngobeni. The commission will sit in the Kruger National Park for six days until the 11th of May 2002. Advocate M. Luphondo who will be lede the evidence will assist Magistrate Ngobeni.

The commission is tasked to enquire into, make findings and report on matters regarding the fire in which 23†people were killed in the Pretoriuskop area of the park. The commission is expected to make its inquiries with†special reference to the origin of the fire, fire hazards at the time, the Kruger National Park’s fire policy,†emergency procedures, and conditions of employment for temporary staff. It will also make recommendations†on how similar situations can be avoided and or minimised in the future.†
