Kruger National Park give shoes to school kids
The Kruger National Park (KNP)’s General Manager: Marula Region, Lucy Nhlapo will, on behalf of the Park present school kids from around the southern part of the park with pairs of shoes on 18 - 26 February 2013.
“We received a donation of 2000 shoes and, realising that there were school kids from the local communities who are in need of these; we decided to bring a bit of warmth to them before the cold weather arrives,” commented Nhlapo.
George Muller from the White River Rotary Club facilitated the donation. The shoes will be distributed to the various primary schools within the Sukumani Park Forum area in schools such as Malekutu, Mvangatini, Thanda, Mzinti, Magcekeni, Tongaview Zibokwane, Maqhekeze, Livelethu, Makoko, Jabulani, Tsandzanani, Letsakuthula, Takheleni, Sehlulile and Sibongile.
“Sourced through the park forums, our People and Conservation Department identified school learners whose situation is critical. Most of these kids are orphans and having some of these necessities makes a huge difference in their lives.” explained Nhlapo.
The remaining shoes will be distributed to school kids that might be in need within the Lubambiswano park forum area; which is also found in the Marula Region of the Park.
“As the Park, we cannot look the other way as these learners live around us and may in a few years from now work in the Park; so we should serve as a beacon of hope by improving the quality of their lives and helping them pave their way to success,” concluded Nhlapo.
South African National Parks (SANParks) has a department called People and Conservation, which is in contact with the communities adjacent to the park on a daily basis. The department has various park forums which allow healthy dialogue and joint-ventures and has resulted in a number of successful projects such as community-managed curio shops, car wash facilities and open safari vehicle services in the Park.
