Media Release: Karoo National Park shines at SANParks Awards
Karoo National Park shone at SANParks’ Frontier Region Awards, held in Graaff-Reinet at the end of last week, with many staff members receiving accolades for their outstanding work.
The awards ceremony is held annually to celebrate the achievements and excellent performance of staff members in the four national parks – Addo Elephant, Karoo, Camdeboo and Mountain Zebra National Parks – which fall into the Frontier Region management grouping.
The Karoo Tourism Department took the honours in the Outstanding Customer Service division for the excellent service and attention to detail that each member of the team affords to park visitors. Jan Jooste and Gavin Lottering received merit awards in the same category while the Park’s Administration department, represented by Arlene Du Toit and Maritsa Conradie, scooped an award for Excellent Performance in the Workplace.
Senior Section Ranger Johan De Klerk stepped up to receive the award for the Best Ranger Post on behalf of the Karoo National Park Rangers, celebrating the excellent conservation work, administrative & financial management as well as discipline that the team has accomplished. The ranger team has also successfully implemented important projects such as lion and springbok introduction and rhino monitoring.
Park Manager, Mzwandile Mjadu, was honoured with the Leadership award in recognition of his valuable work in terms of leading his staff as well as working with the Beaufort-West community. Community work, coupled with environmental education skills, was also a skill recognised in the awarding of the Constituency builder of the Year award to Jan Jacobs.
One of the highlights of the awards ceremony was the handover of an award to Sue Downie and Lucky Mavrandonis for the valuable financial and operational support they have provided to SANParks in terms of the monitoring and protection of rhino. Downie and Mavrandonis have raised funds through the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation and other private ventures and have harnessed innovative measures to ensure that rhino are effectively conserved in the national parks in the region.
Nominations for the Regional Award winners are sent through to the national SANParks Kudu Awards adjudication process.
The awards ceremony was much enjoyed by all who attended, with a lively atmosphere provided by Graaff-Reinet’s own La Petit Jazz band.
