Marakele Marathon raises R260 000 towards conservation

On Saturday, 8 April 2017, over 600 runners gathered for the annual Marakele Marathon. This unique Comrades’ qualifier which takes place in Marakele National Park, where the Big 5 roam, saw Phineus Mothoa and Zanie van Rensburg emerge as winners in the 42 km men and women’s race respectively.

Visitor management is a vital part of ensuring the best possible experience for all visitors to Kruger National Park over the coming Easter Weekend, Thursday 13, until Monday, 17 April 2017. With this in mind, South African National Parks (SANParks) would like to remind Day Visitors to the Kruger National Park (KNP) that daily quotas will once again apply at the entrance gates. Visitors are urged to make pre-bookings for their visits prior to their arrival and there are three time slots which they can choose from as follows:

  • Time slot 1: 06.00 to 08:00
  • Time slot 2: 08:00 to 10:00
  • Time slot 3: 10:00 onwards

NatGeo announces the Garden Route as thee destination for Spring/Winter for SA

Two weeks ago, traveller24 announced South Africa’s Southern N2 from Cape Town in the Western Cape to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape was voted among NatGeo’s 12 Global destinations. Media Release: Dolphin mass stranding in Algoa Bay

On Friday, 31 March 2017, a mass stranding of 38 common dolphins was reported to have occurred along a remote stretch of coast under the protection of Addo Elephant National Park, between Sundays River Mouth and Woody Cape in Algoa Bay, Eastern Cape. The local authority dealing with all whale, dolphin and seal strandings, the Port Elizabeth Museum at Bayworld, was alerted. A site visit on the day by South African National Parks (SANParks) and Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) officials ascertained that the animals most likely had been stranded four to five days earlier and were all dead.

Media Release: SANParks Rangers capture ten suspected poachers and suffer the loss of one Ranger

South African National Parks (SANParks) on Tuesday, 21 March 2016 announced the death of a Field Ranger in what appears to have been an accidental shooting. The incident happened at Lower Sabie in the Kruger National Park (KNP), where the Field Ranger was based and details are still sketchy at this stage but the South African Police Service (SAPS) are investigating the incident.

Upper Tokai update

In the interest of public safety and for the protection of environmental integrity the Upper Tokai section of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) remained closed to the public for safety and rehabilitation reasons. SANParks however continued to engage with various stakeholders resulting in the successful reopening of Upper Tokai on 10 December 2016. Upper Tokai remains open on to the public on weekends only.

Media Release: Military truck overturns at Crocodile River low level bridge in the Kruger National Park

A South African Military Truck with four army staff members based in the Park overturned and fell off the Crocodile River low level bridge in the Kruger National Park (KNP) at about 06:30 yesterday, 26 September 2016. There was diesel spillage into the river and a company to attend to the spill was appointed immediately in order to avoid possible pollution to water and the environment in general.
