The Kruger National Park (KNP) is beginning with the process of reviewing its Park Management Plan as from 18 April 2017, which is a requirement of the National Environment Management: Protected Areas Act No 57 of 2003 that stipulates that all protected areas must have management plans and review them every 10 years.

Media Release: SANParks dispute with former Famous Brands franchisee

South African National Parks (SANParks) said in a statement, the three restaurants in Satara, Letaba & Olifants camps in the Kruger National Park formerly franchised by Famous Brands (Mugg n Bean & Debonairs) are managed by a concessionaire. Due to a dispute between Famous Brands and Ringgold (the Franchisee) and the resulting termination of the agreement between the parties, Ringgold has lost the right to use Famous Brand trademarks in its stores.

Media Release: SANParks Rangers capture ten suspected poachers and suffer the loss of one Ranger

South African National Parks (SANParks) on Tuesday, 21 March 2016 announced the death of a Field Ranger in what appears to have been an accidental shooting. The incident happened at Lower Sabie in the Kruger National Park (KNP), where the Field Ranger was based and details are still sketchy at this stage but the South African Police Service (SAPS) are investigating the incident.

Upper Tokai update

In the interest of public safety and for the protection of environmental integrity the Upper Tokai section of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) remained closed to the public for safety and rehabilitation reasons. SANParks however continued to engage with various stakeholders resulting in the successful reopening of Upper Tokai on 10 December 2016. Upper Tokai remains open on to the public on weekends only.

SANParks meets dog walkers half way in Wilderness

28 February 2017

SANParks is meeting dog owners half way concerning walking dogs in the Garden Route National Park. New areas for walking dogs on the beach in Wilderness were rezoned considering input from extensive research and surveys done. These zones are now simplified in a guideline (brochure & visible signage) published by the Park for walking dogs in designated areas of the Park. Signage will be erected by the end of this week with rezoned areas and brochures distributed first in Wilderness.

The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa, has on 24 February 2017, published in Government Notice R. 167 in Government Gazette No. 40638 draft regulations on the reclamation of land from coastal waters, for public comment. The regulations seek to provide an administrative framework to implement sections 7B and 7C of the National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act, 2008 (Act No. 24 of 2008) relating to the submission, processing and consideration of applications for approval to reclaim land from coastal waters.

Ecological burn to restore critically endangered Knysna Sand Fynbos on Private Land in GRNP

A team of stakeholders has set the 06th March 2017 as a possible date for an ecological burn. The planned burn which was postponed last year is now back on the cards of a steering committee concerned about the ecological wellbeing of the area. The burn will include some 71 hectares on the Southern slopes along the Brenton-on-sea Road which includes Portions 39 and 40 of the Uitzigt Farm.

New area for day visitors in Wilderness section of Garden Route National Park

There are now officially designated areas for day visitors in the Wilderness section of Garden Route National Park. The move to have designated areas was motivated by a growing number of day visitors to Wilderness. In 2016, 71 280 day visitors entered the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park compared to last year’s 61 770. So says Area Manager of Wilderness, Sandra Taljaard "we have recorded an increase of day visitors as well as campers from 2014 and thus the need to cater for the different needs and expectations of different visitors."

Media Release: Military truck overturns at Crocodile River low level bridge in the Kruger National Park

A South African Military Truck with four army staff members based in the Park overturned and fell off the Crocodile River low level bridge in the Kruger National Park (KNP) at about 06:30 yesterday, 26 September 2016. There was diesel spillage into the river and a company to attend to the spill was appointed immediately in order to avoid possible pollution to water and the environment in general.
