There are now officially designated areas for day visitors in the Wilderness section of Garden Route National Park. The move to have designated areas was motivated by a growing number of day visitors to Wilderness. In 2016, 71 280 day visitors entered the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park compared to last year’s 61 770. So says Area Manager of Wilderness, Sandra Taljaard "we have recorded an increase of day visitors as well as campers from 2014 and thus the need to cater for the different needs and expectations of different visitors."

Introducing children to our game parks

South Africa’s vast network of protected areas representing the country`s rich indigenous fauna, fIora, landscapes and associated cultural heritage are found in over 19 game reserves. Sadly, the vast majority of children who live in and around the parks had never previously had a chance to visit these wiId areas. The Kids in Parks Programme is changing that. Established in 2005, Kids in Parks is a partnership between the Department of Environmental Affairs, South African National Parks (SAN Parks), the Department of Basic Education and retailer Pick n Pay. The aim is simple: to expose as many children as possible to South Africa`s diverse natural and cultural heritage in order to foster a lifelong passion for conservation and a sense of pride of South Africa’s biodiversity.

Getting kids to Mzansi parks

Many parents don`t seem to even consider taking their kids to national parks for an outing, rather opting for malls instead. But the truth is that exposing your kids to SA`s diverse natural and cultural heritage not only give them first-hand experience of, Mzansi`s natural and cultural heritage, they will even become passionate about conservation. Minister of Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa says the majority of children who live in and around these parks had never had a chance to visit these wild wonderlands.- Mzansi has over 19 national parks that represent the country`s rich fauna, flora, landscapes and cultural heritage. Edna said their Kids in Parks Programme, which encourages children to learn more about biodiversity and how to sustain it, was started in 2005.

There was diesel spillage into the river and a company to attend to the spill was appointed immediately in order to avoid possible pollution to water and the environment in general.
