Morula Kids 2007
About the Competition
The Morula Kids Art Competition is one of various Environmental Education programmes offered by South African National Parks (SANParks), to increase the level of environmental awareness amongst the South African public broadly, and more specifically, learners.
This national competition focuses on learners at the General Education and Training Level (GET), particularly those currently in the Foundation and Intermediate Phases. It dares both learners and educators to use their creative skills in the form of art, sculptors, and essays to respond to challenges facing conservation and sustainable use of natural resources within reserves and national parks.
The Morula tree was selected as the official logo for the competition and hence the Morula Kids Art Competition. This tree was chosen because of its abundance in most African countries. It is one of the important fruit-bearing indigenous trees in South Africa. Apart from also being the tasty food to a host of animals, birds and humans, it is famous for its various uses. It can make very delicious jam, beer and liqueurs using the exotic tasting fruit. It can be used for medicinal purposes and can serve as shade where communities sit and hold their meetings.
This year, 2007 the theme is Know your South African National Parks. The Learners are expected to draw or paint a set of 6 pictures on A4 – size paper to show clearly the importance of the link between people and conservation in one park of their choice.
As winners, each of the 30 lucky Grade 3 -7 learners will get to experience the excitement and thrill of the wild by visiting a national park nearest to them and a Go-Wild card and a certificate of participation.
The idea is that learners should go back to their respective schools motivated to learn more about conservation and the environment, hence the involvement of the educators in the programme.
The programme enjoys the benefit of key partners such as the SABC, through SABC School TV for television and radio air time, the Tourism and Marketing Department with a sponsorship of Go-Wild cards and Working for Water for supporting posters and entry forms development to market the campaign nationally, The Department of Arts and Culture and SAB-Miller for their financial support.

Entry forms and posters are available from all People and Conservation Units at all national parks.
