The Wilderness National Park launched it's new look on Tuesday, 1 July. Arriving at the park, guests now enter via a thatched entrance gate and are welcomed in a cool and stylish thatched reception building.

On Saturday, 23 February 2008, close family, a few selected SANParks officials and the press witnessed the unveiling of a memorial in honour of the late writer, Dalene Matthee. It was Matthee ’s fervent wish to have her ashes scattered in the Knysna Forest and her three daughters saw it as a fitting remembrance to their mom, to have a special memorial erected in the place Matthee so loved.

Following the recent, devastating floods in the Southern Cape, which saw a record amount of 435 mm of rain hitting the George area in two days, mop-up operations at Wilderness National Park's Ebb and Flow south and north rest camps, Wilderness beaches, Touw River Mouth, the Lagoon, Island Lake, Swartvlei Mouth, forest picnic sites and the Woodville 'Big Tree' are proceeding according to schedule and the park will re-open on the 21 December 2007 as planned.

South African National Parks would like to announce that as of this morning the Wilderness National Park and Nature’s Valley rest-camp in the Tsitsikamma National Park are completely flooded. Tourists who were in these areas have been evacuated. Operations in the park & the camp will be suspended for a minimum period of four weeks (till 21 December 2007), until full clean operations have been completed. Bookings during this period will either be cancelled or diverted to other national parks.

The long predicated rains started on Tuesday 1 August in the afternoon with an overnight rainfall of 149.25 mm. The rest camp and staff houses in the Wilderness National Park were evacuated on Wednesday morning and by 13:00 the park looked like a giant river. Due to the timeous evacuation there was no loss of life or injuries sustained in the Park.
