Namaqua’s flower update for 16 July 2009
Date: 2009-07-17
We have had excellent follow-up rains in the Namaqua National Park. Skilpad is looking unbelievably good with few people currently visiting to enjoy it! It seems nobody expected the flowers to be this early. Carpets of orange daisies are covering most of the flower areas at Skilpad. Yellow Oxalis sp are still prominent as well.
Some lachenalias were already noticed along streams. Almost all streams and rivers have running water.
The coastal areas are noticeably greener and we expect a bumper flower showing later in these areas. The road between Groen river and Garies are also worth driving.
Please note that the gravel road to Skilpad (Namaqua National Park) has been damaged by heavy rains and visitors should drive slowly.
Rainfall for Skilpad as follows:
- April 2009: 35.6mm
- May 2009: 39.1mm
- June 2009: 123.4mm
- July 2009: 20.3mm (to date)
