Media Release: KNP joins hands with Traditional Health Practitioners to fight poaching

Kruger National Park (KNP) joins hands with Traditional Health Practitioners in an attempt to fight the escalating rhino poaching pandemic. Over 500 Traditional Health Practitioners from Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces gathered at Skukuza soccer stadium today (Friday, 31 August 2012) to declare their stand against rhino poaching.

In a South African National Parks (SANParks) anti-rhino poaching operation four (4) rhino poaching suspects were arrested in the Kruger National Park (KNP) this week.

New Berg-en-Dal picnic site

The Berg-en-Dal picnic site started operating on the 1st of August 2012. The site is operated by the local community from the Hectorspruit area outside the Malelane Gate. Derick Khoza is the friendly host at the picnic site.

Media Release: Anthrax outbreak in the north of the KNP

Over the last two days, 30 carcasses of roan antelopes were discovered at the Capricorn Rare antelope enclosure in the northern part of the park, around the Mopani camp area. The animals are believed to have died from yet another outbreak of the anthrax disease in the park, like it normally happens from time to time during this time of the year.

The Kruger National Park (KNP) together with Scarce Skills Development and Training (SSDT), P.D Naidoo and Associates (PDNA), Automobile Training Academy (ATA); Nkangala Further Education & Training College and Eskom, launched an artisan training programme on Friday, 17 August 2012. The programme is aimed at training engineering students to become artisans.

Kruger National Park’s (KNP) HOD: Tourism and Marketing, Ms Lucy Nhlapo has officially launched the “Vukani the Vulture” mascot today, Wednesday (25 July 2012) during the Keep Kruger Clean Campaign. The mascot will assist in keeping Kruger clean by influencing people to change their behaviour about littering in the park.

 

Media Release: Fatal drowning in Kruger National Park

South African National Parks (SANParks) regrets to announce the fatal drowning of a 4 year old girl at the Lower Sabie Camp swimming pool in Kruger National Park this afternoon (17 July 2012). Doctors were called to the scene and tried everything in their power to save her but they were unable to. The South African Police Services are investigating the incident. SANParks would like to send their condolences to the family and wish them strength in their hour of darkness. 

Revised Zoning System - Kruger National Park

In the last approved management plan South African National Parks reflected on the need to re-think the zonation system for the Kruger National Park (Kruger NP) to reflect the complexity of managing a National Park in the 21st century. As a result, the revised zonation is based on the imperatives for the conservation of biodiversity, socio-economic upliftment, land restitution, proposed Greater Lebombo Conservancy (GLC) buffer zone in Mozambique  and opportunities for tourism development as a vehicle for economic growth in the regions where the park is situated. 

Media Release: KNP to get an answer on Bovine Tuberculosis

The Kruger National Park’s Veterinary Wildlife Service Department will from tomorrow (3 July 2012) begin with the final process of a Bovine Tuberculosis (BTB) research project, which started in 2008 in the park in order to determine the effect of the disease on free ranging buffalos.

The patrolling of the two million hectare Kruger National Park (KNP) will from today ease a bit as the KNP’s Managing Executive, Mr Abe Sibiya handed over an Ultra-Light Bantam Aircraft to enhance rangers’ ability to deal with rhino poaching as well as accepted R1 374 327 rand worth of donated equipment on behalf of the park’s Ranger Corps from the SANParks Honorary Rangers.

A driver of a delivery truck (with trailer attached) belonging to one of the contractors currently working in the Park, Shivers Contracting Company who collided with a herd of impala last week on the Kruger Gate - Skukuza road; which resulted in the deaths of at least seven impala was slapped with a fine of R2500.
