This notice serves to inform you that all restaurants in the Kruger National Park are currently fully operational and continue to provide catering services as usual.  It is business as usual for tour operators that have credit facilities with Natures Group, whose affairs are now being managed by the appointed liquidator.

Elephant causes excitement

Great excitement was caused today (October 26, 2005) at around 14:00 when an elephant bull wandered through the KNP’s Corporate and Scientific Service office complex.

A Boksburg school, the Mooiplaas Ranger Section and a bunch of balloons were linked together in the strangest of ways today (Friday, 7 October 2005).  Mooiplaas Section Ranger, Mr Johann Oelofse, addressed the pupils of Laeskool Van Dyk Primary on the dangers of littering, especially in the Kruger National Park (KNP).  “Litter not only looks ugly but can have disastrous effects on our natural surroundings,” he explained to 800 eager faces.

Buses larger than 4 000kg or with more than 25 seats in the Kruger National Park (KNP) will from this month be restricted to traveling on tar roads.

The tightening up of this restriction comes into effect after the present rules applying to these vehicles – which were implemented in 1999 – were reviewed in terms of the new Biodiversity and Protected Areas Acts. In terms of these new acts, it is a statutory requirement to manage and reduce human impact and interference in a national park.

South African National Parks (SANParks) is well known for its ability of shifting large animals like elephant, rhino and giraffe, but this week history was made with the translocation of two baobab trees from Letaba Main Camp to the new Giriyondo Border Post on the Mozambique border.

Although this unusual translocation wasn’t the first baobab translocation ever, it was still a challenge to SANParks because of the extreme weight of the trees themselves and their close proximity to buildings and other facilities in Letaba Main Camp.
