Media Release: Orpen Gate Robbed
Date: 2006-10-03
Orpen Entrance Gate in the Kruger National Park (KNP) was robbed early this morning by eight armed men.
It is believed that eight robbers who were heavily armed overpowered the guards and forced one of the camp officials to open the safe. They then escaped with cash.
No one was injured during the incident and the South African Police Service (SAPS) are currently investigating the case together with SANParks Corporate Investigative Service (CIS) officials around the clock.
“We salute the efforts of the SAPS in bringing all the suspects of the recent Crocodile Bridge robbery to book and will continue to support them with their investigations. “Most of these robberies seem to have been well planned and we are working on strategies with the SAPS to try and stop these incidents before they happen,” said KNP Executive Director, Dr Bandile Mkhize.
Armed guards will be placed at the more vulnerable KNP gates in order to beef up security.
